Recommend me introductory books in psychology, language/linguistics and religion
    #10553995 - 06/22/09 02:35 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Hi

I'm reading Routledge 'Philosophy: The Basics'. I'd like to get similar books for:
-Psychology
-Language/Linguistics
-Religion

Any recomendations? I've had a good search on Amazon, but I'm curious to see what you guys think. Not after text books, just 200pg average introductory books.

Thanks!!

Steven Pinker;  The Language Instinct
Also anything else by him.  Very readable.

heres an amaxing site for you, itl keep you busy for weeks.
http://www.dmt-nexus.com/
just go to files.

the i ching is in there, food of the gods by terence mkenna, lots of stuff on ayahuasca.

I also recommend ``a short history of nearly everything`` by Bill Bryson, Celestine Prophesy (its a fun book) i forget by who, and just go to your local university and buy a basic psychology textbook, theres more in there youll ever need to know.  Trust me Ive had to read 3 and I dont remember at least half.

hope that helps!

No.  I read The LI and How the Mind Works.  If you like that and want a little tougher shit try Francis Crick's, The Astonishing Hypothesis.  A really intense examination of cognition and brain function focusing mostly on visual processing.

I very much enjoyed that Bill Bryson.  It was lots of fun.  Then again, Bryson is always a delight.  Have you read Mother Tongue?  A love letter to the English language.

Pinker's "The Blank Slate" changed my life.

Daniel Dennett's Breaking the Spell is a very good book about religion. He attempts to take the Martian view and analyze human religious tendencies like any other behavioral characteristic, including the evolutionary benefits of it and the ways religion uses to memes for self preservation.

Thanks chaps.

Pinker's books are on the list already. Already read the Bryson book. I'll note the others.

DMT Nexus is cool, thanks.

For Religion and Psychology I was kinda hoping for books describing all major religions and schools of psychology, just to get a grounding. Then I can move onto more specific things.

I'm reading Prometheus Rising at the moment. It is fun. Oh yes.

Thanks again
