I second Life of Pi by Yann Martel - here is a book that will make you believe in God.
Rule of the Bone - Russel Banks - coming of age story in the vernacular of a 14 year old kid from a poor area of new york, adventures with bikers, rastas, jamaica, great read.
Electric Koolaid Acid Test - Tom Wolfe - Just finished it, it'll make you live life a little crazier for a while, very euphoric thing to read. Poppy, explosive litereature. fun fun fun.

the acid house - irvine welsh
The author of Trainspotting, it's basically alot of short stories about anything and everything. About life in Europe, sex, drugs, alcohol, guns, vulgarities, you know. Apart from all that it's actually a very good read. Smart and witty, very intellectual if you look beyond the vulgarities, haha.
choke - chuck palahniuk
what can i say? i'm a fan of chuck. a portrait of the american society. it tells a story of a 20 something year old man having to take care of his ill mother but not having enough income. to do so he has to fake a few near-deaths at restaurants. good storyline, very good details. very good book.
out - natsuo kirino
it's a japanese book. but i THINK they might have the translated version. natsuo is a very renowed author here in japan. she's popular as a crime writer. quote from a critic "Out is a psychologically taut and unflinching foray into the darkess recesses of the human soul, an unsettling reminder that the desperate desire for freedom can make the most ordinary person do the unimaginable." Good book. Go figure.
-------------------- I never supposed for the love of me that it would all be so vivid.

finally finished Umberto Ecos’ the Island of the Day Before, it was one of those nagging things that just had to be finished, like Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintanance, or Gravity's Rainbow, if you know what i mean. currently digging (with a heavy shovel) some mystical stuff from awhile back: count Jan Potocki –The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (trippiest tale within a tale within a tale within a dream within a dream i’ve read so far, w/succubi, cabbalists, geometrists, drugs, hot babes and all, written ~1800!) H.P. Blavatsky – The New Panarion Sri Aurobindo - The Integral yoga P.D. Ouspensky – Strange Life of Ivan Osokin and just started getting into Jose Arguelles time theories, Telektonon, Dreamspell - wish i had more time (ahem) to delve into the undrlying mathematics...

This book is a must read: Wake the Wicked ! It's compiled of 13 twisted tales. Hands down the most fucked up horror book you'll ever read. It was just released on the day of the Mayan apocalypse.
Go to WakeTheWicked.com for a synopses and video book trailer.
(I heard the paperback is coming out soon too btw.)

I love sci-fi, these are two of my favorites.
H.G Wells - The Time Machine (Classic Sci-fi, man builds time machine that takes him to a very different, trippy world, one of my favorite novels of all time, quick read too!)
Ray Bradbury - Martian Chronicles (Another Sci-fi, originally written as a series of short stories for a magazine and put together at a later date for the book, about future humans colonizing on mars and the very strange extra terrestrials they find their.)
