how do i get wirelss in my laptop

so i got my first laptop yesterday (Dell Inspiron).. I was trying to get wirelss on it last night but got so god damn frustrated that i quit. I have a linksys (WRT110) router connected to my cable modem. I am able to get online but only when i have the ethernet connected to it.. What do i have to do to go wireless???

how do you have the linksys hooked up? do you have a desktop set as your primary computer?

your laptop should automatically detect the wireless network when it boots up. you can also search for wireless networks by clicking on:

start -> connect to -> and then using the pull down thing at the top to select wireless networks. right click on the network you want, hit connect, and it should either prompt you for a password if your network is encrypted or it will just connect.

Well first you need to have a wireless nic in your laptop. Then you have to set it up to connect to the router. This may require a key. Although linksys used to default to open AP.

If you double click on the monitor icon with the parenthis looking things coming out of it in the taskbar then click the view wireless networks button, you'll come up with a list of APs. Your wireless router should be listed. Which you can select as your default connection.

Basically it will require reading about stuff. :P Or you could call the wonderful support team at Dell. LOL.

Make sure your Wifi Arial is turned on.

You should have a Lit arial icon beside where you see power, capslock etc

If not there will be a switch on the side of the laptop to turn this on.

Then you will have a Wireless connection Icon down by the clock in windows, Choose your Router out of teh list. You will need to put in a WEP key, You get this by connecting via an network cable to the router and typing in the IP address of the router into a web browser.

Looks like wireless security (WPA etc.) is disabled by default on this model. Looks nice actually. I glanced through the user manual. Better than my wrt54g router by linksys.

I'm almost there.. But now it says im missing a wireless adapter.. I was under the impression that all new laptops came with this?? Wireless adapter is basicaly a usb port, correct?

No, it's not a USB port. Two totally different things.

Most all new laptops do indeed come with a wifi card. If you goto "My network Places(Network Connections)" look in there and see if there's a "Wireless Network Connection" if not, you need a wifi card.

What's the model of your laptop?

no. It's a card. it would be under a panel on the bottom of the laptop generally. Or integrated into the motherboard. If you right click on My Computer choose properties, then the hardware tab, then the device manager button, it should show you what you have under network adapters.

ya, i found it... i right clicked it and enabled it...but than the battery dies:mad2:

The battery die or did it just shutdown. Could be a driver conflict or something causing the system to crash. Does it start alright with the power cable plugged in?

You should feel good you've probably saved yourself 3 hours on the phone with a tech support guy telling you to buy a new wireless router just for the hell of it.
