I'm not so sure a piece of software can help amplify the signal, you'd need a piece of hardware i believe to help catch the signal better. The only thing you can do is move closer to the source or buy an amplifier
do some reading if ya want

Stealing an internet connection is the same as stealing cable, water or electricity from your neighbor. I'm not going to tell you to stop since I've done it before in a limited situation, but just realize that you are stealing.

Do you use Windows or Mac?

It's not stealing if they broadcast it. My friend leaves his connection unsecure so people can hop on if they want.. since he's used so many other unsecure networks in the past and this is his way of spreading the love. If people can't properly secure their network, well, it's safe to assume they just want to share.

I've used this program called netstumbler:
http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/
You can monitor the signal level to hopefully move your laptop for the best signal strength.

So, how goes Google's fight for an open wireless network?

Couldn't you click on one of the icons for the wirelsess and then subscribe to it?
Or maybe you aren't close enough to the box. A box can pretty much send a strong signal for about 30 feet.
