we have had our wireless network hooked up for atleast a yr now with a linksys router, but we just moved one of our computers to a different room in the house. now the computer cant detect the network, and it is about 30 feet max, away from the router. we live in a regular house, no concrete walls or anything like that for the signal to pass threw just the kitchen, which is all open basicly and then about 3 feet inside the next room is the computer. i was just wondering if i have a setting wrong or something else could be causing it to have such a weak/no signal. i even bought the bigger antenas for the router to see if that would make a difference. any info or imput would be apriciated.

Could be the microwave, but I think that would only affect the signal when it's on.

Well does it have a weak signal or no signal.
There is a big difference.
If it can detect the network then you have something more to work with.

You need to move both wireless devices around until they can see each other. Probably there is a piece of metal in the way, or several. But since it is only 30 feet away, there will be many spots where they will be able to see each other. Once you get a weak signal, start a ping and move the equipment around until the ping loses less than 1% of the packets.
In general its best to have both antennas as high off the ground as possible, and in a relatively open space, away from other metal as much as possible - not in the middle of a bunch of wires and computer crap. I put mine on top of a tall wooden book shelf, works great.

sorry its taken so long to reply, i was at work.. well i can rarely get a signal, but usually there is no signal. the router is about 4 feet off the ground on a wooden shelf. our filing cabinet is beside the computer, do you think that if i move it that could help? once again Ty for all the info so far:).

Is your router not set up to broadcast the SSID?

If you are getting a connection to the internet weak or not than the router needs to be moved. If you are not ever getting a connection you can try power cycling and see if that will work.

Ok seriously, I used to work as chief IT Systems Administrator for the largest accounting firm in Australia i looked after alot of important shit so basically what im saying is you guys are all noobs and i am luckely stoned enough to find your posts amusing rather then idiotic...
Ne how lol
willmafingerdo gunna need some more info buddy. If your using a Linksys router i can pretty much garantee you the wireless side of things is not the problems its going to be a configuration issue the only 'interference' so to speak that is going to upset a linksys router would be a big magnet or an EMF. These routers are the shit and its like 1 to 1000000000000 chance the router is faulty.
Has anything been changed in network connections on any pc or has any thing been changed in the router confuiguration utility ?
Have you installed any new programs on the pc that wont detect the network and to clarify are you using standard Windows Wireless Networking or some linksys software management utility ? And im assuming your running xp pro on both machines ?
Comon mate give me the info and ill give u ur answer !

both PC's are running xp pro
the wireless cards came with their own network management software(both computers have the same type/brand of wireless card), which i was using, and i also switched back to windows version of the wireless management tool on both of the PC's to see if that would make a difference, but it didn't.
no i haven't installed any new software on the PC's.
the only thing is since you said a big magnet, the router is by our TV, about 3 feet away from it, would that make a diff?
i just took my laptop down into the room that I'm having trouble with and it uses windows wireless network tool and it picked up a low signal sitting on the computer desk. could it just be i bought a crappy wireless card for the PC? or are they all basically the same?
i hope that is the info you were looking for if not let me know anything else you might need. i probably wont beable to respond right away to posts i have a very busy schedule now that school started back up and working. just to let ya know i didn't forget about the post, just only get about 10 min to sit down and relax everyday.

hmm sounds to me if youve taken your laptop and sat it pretty much next to the router and its low signal that ur router is playing games. Login to the router interface and linksys routers have a setting where you can adjust the amount of power you would like to feed into the arials on the router. This enables you to restrict the distance that can gain access to the router (security) check that this has been maxed out you shouldnt have any problems finding the option with a bit of looking around just dont change anything u dont understand without posting first and screen dumps are handy too !
Once you check this if the problem persists you will need to hard reset or factory reset ur router with a paper clip. (look for a tiny hole on the front or back of the router) unbend the paper clip leave the device powered on but leave any other omnious cables unplugged from the router push the reset switch inside the small hole 3 times holding each for a second or hold for 10 secs the lights on the front of the router should flash in a pattern or all turn on and off to show you that the reset has been complete. Once this is dont reconnect appropriate cables etc and reboot 1 pc i recomend the laptop and leave the desktops turned off.
EDIT: Obviously at this stage you will need to log back into the router interface and reconfigure it. (dont use any old save config you might have)
Also i would like to add since it has been moved it is possible the arials may have become dislodged make sure the antenna's on the pcs and the router are screwed in firmly and point the arials up and out at a 45* Angle.
Get Back to me when uve tried this.
P.S I dont think your tv will be a major problem moreso things like high voltage power lines running over your house or some sort of high power broadcasting or receiving device.
Focus on your equipment for now. The Answer comes with deduction.

i took my laptop into where the computer was that could not detect the network, not by the router. today i walked around my house w/ my laptop checking my signal strengths throughout the house and to get an excellent signal i had to be within like 12-15 feet of the router i really figured that a wireless signal would reach allot farther than that.. the other thing is that i can pick up other ppls wireless networks, they are a really low signal strength but still detectable. i don't know were they live but i know it has to be at least 50- 100 feet away from were my router is at. why do they have such strong signals and i don't?
i read the manual for the router and checked all the settings that i think would have anything to do with my problem and they were all were the manual said they should be. if you would like me to post any settings info just let me know.
