Re: How to punish young kids! [Re: indigo_shades]

I think locking a child in her room is cruel and mean.  IMO 2 years of age is still a baby - as is 3.  I know my own daughter didn't really understand right from wrong that well at that age.

I don't believe in scare tactics as a disciplinary tool either.

A tantrum is just a way to get attention - so don't give her any - whether it be negative or any other.  When my daughter would throw a hissy I would not even look at her and just continue whatever it was I was doing.  She soon learned that there was nothing to be gained from throwing one.

no, but seriously.  discipline must be consistent.  no "giving in".  it may take time and it will be hard for mom to bear.  mom may not allow what she thinks to be cruel.  if this is the case i would get out of the relationship or be prepared for a long hard life with a spoiled brat.

haha parenting skill learned on the Shroomery! Whats next??

I actually did question myself about asking for parenting advice on the shroomery but in our case i needed some feedback from others and i feel like this community is more than just a drug/mushroom chat to me.  I come across alot of level headed people just like me who is and has been through alot of the same things as I.  So far the general sensus is that a child needs to be punished and it needs to be consistent.  yesterday i had alot easier time with her understanding if you do something wrong you will go to your room.  first a warning, maybe even a couple of them but eventually the warning run out then you get time out.

"if you do something wrong there is a consequence" is one level of understanding.

"Doing this is wrong because..." is another.

Psychologists agree that the most critical time in a child's development is between the ages of 2 and 3. This i the time when children pick up behavior patterns that stick with them for the rest of their lives.

Where children at this age may not fully grasp complex abstract concepts like 'right and wrong' they are able to pick up on patterns in their material worlds such as 'cause and effect'.

These two factors make it an ideal time to begin disciplining unruly kids before they turn into unruly adults.
