I have used the microwave technique once when I had some left over substrate. To my surprise it worked. I think that as long as you don't use too much substrate in each container, and add a little more water it may work. But, I think that overall the microwave is not the best option, because you need to be very exact on times as well as water content, or run the risk of burned or dried out substrate.

I tried using the microwave twice. The first time I used a plastic bowl and it got so hot it melted the plastic and cracked the turn table and I had to get a new microwave. Since mine was already broken, I tried using a glass bowl instead and it cracked the glass bowl the second time.
