I mean really folks, come on.
They keep doing studies... and we end up with nothing better than placebo pretty much every time. Anyone surprised?

Um. Ayahuasca works because it contains DMT and an MAOI.

St. John's Wort, Ginko, and most of that shit don't work because they don't do anything.

Placebo.

eh, they seem to work for some people... placebos can work better than modernized medicine thats been "proved" to work if the individual truly honestly believes the placebo works better than the other crap.
i figure let people believe in what they want. if you think you've got better memory, your prolly gonna get better memory anyways :-)

I agree.

SSRI's certainly work, just not how they are supposed too. These medicines are evil, they change people's personality completely. I've seen it happen. Placebo may work to help alleviate somone, but it won't make them into somebody they are not. St. John's Wort contains SSRI's.

Hi peeps. My first post. i was just mooching through the site and i saw this post and felt the need to write a reply.

St John's Wort does work if you use it correctly. Having a couple of capsules when you're feeling a little pissed off won't have any effect whatsoever.

If you want to try SJW for real, then get the tea bags. Take one mug first thing in the morning, one last thing at night, and another two mugs equally spaced during the day. You get used to the taste after a couple of days.

Leave the tea bag in the mug to infuse really strongly.

You need to take this continuously for about four weeks in order to get the full effects. If you don't take it continuously then the stuff won't build up in your system and it won't have any effect - simple as that.

It does work if you use it correctly. Only don't do the above if you are on any other medication, the contraindication stuff will probably fuck you up.

Using SJW tea is also a good thing for cutting down on the methyl xanthines (tea and coffee), which really stress people out and cause depression in themselves.

Most herbs that have medical potential eventually wind up in a pill manufactured by some pharmaceutical company. In fact the majority of western medice comes from some plant somewhere.

I think it's closer to about 25%, but yeah...to extrapolate from a single article about ginkgo that the efficacy of most "herbal medicines" is the result of placebo is just stupid. Sort of like concluding that fruit is dangerous after eating Belladonna berries (that plant being the major source of pharmaceutical atropine, incidentally)...

Milk thistle extract is a good example of an OTC herbal med with proven effectiveness.

Homeopathic medicines on the other hand...

SSRI's and those type drugs are NOT placebo. A lot of herbs such as St. John's Wort are also not placebo. However SSRI's are a lot stronger than St. John's Wort, and I think there mechanism is the same. I think many natural herbs are sold as natural because many people seem to have an idea that things that don't come drom a lab are safer. So it is a marketing scam.

I see the point you're trying to make, but it's completely unrelated to the point I'm making.

Sure, the placebo effects can be beneficial, but people are shelling out $50 for a bottle of this crap. It's a scam.

The "Placebo Effect" is something completely different from self healing. The Placebo effect is a statistical misinterpretation of data, not an actual improvement in a condition.
