Salvia Divinorum & Light intensity
    #1027212 - 11/06/02 08:38 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

This diagram illustrates the effect on growth that light intensity has on Salvia Divinorum. At Higher light levels the leaf?s are smaller, but more branches and leafs nodes occur for a given length of stem. The higher light intensity also resulted in a lighter green leaf colour. The lower light levels resulted greater height and leaf size.

Very interesting.

Care to speculate on the effect light intensity has on Salvinorin-A concentrations?

This is a great demonstration of how important light requirements are to certain plants. Intuitive ideas for most plants are, more light the better! But this isn't always the case. You've demonstrated this quite well SE! Good work!

yes, nice job. I'd like to know more details though. like, hours of light for the shaded plant, or kind of light? I mean was that puppy under a 40 watt floulescent? how far away... etc... what was the temp? humidity? Ph, all the juicey numbers, can ya tell us? can ya?

The light source is natural light from a south-facing window.

The shaded plant gets very little sunlight (full shade), while the other plant gets midday direct sunlight filtered through a glass window, clear plastic and bubble rap.

The plants are kept at leased at room temp (70 - 75 f), but when sun light enters the grow tent it significantly heats up (up to approx 85 f). This causes the humidity to increase also, which I think protects the plants from the heat.

The plants are grown in a small humid green house, with heated water bath to help maintain temp and humidity. The tent also has fresh air pumped into it through a bubbler. The tent is not airtight.

Soil ph should be slightly acidic based on the soil used and feed which is for acid loving plants.

It's just like what you find in and forest or woods. You'll find bigger leafy plants in the shaded areas, and smaller leafed plants in the unshaded areas. Plants living in the shade still need nutrients, and the only way to get adequate amounts are to have bigger leaves. I think it is very interesting that the leaves of the plant can vary that much.

I have the same thing accuring: 2 plants, on with only on stem, placed in full shade, next to east facing window, but never get full light, the other get like 2 hours of sun, but it's cloudy now... here a little plan:

*****************SUN
--------_______-------|
******window*Y***X  |
                            plant 1: X
                            plant 2 : Y
The first salvia (dolly 1) is quite high (50 cm - 4 month old), and dolly 2, (Y) has two stem (middle cutting) and has smaller leaves, is about 30 cm high, but more dense foliage...
Just sharing my experience, to show that little difference that can change the plant's aspect...   see ya!

After my 3rd year of outdoor growing in good ole MIchigan I can tell you that>SALVIA loves the shade..Get big dark leaves and grows Tall!! direct sun yielded only very short plants with many small leaves..Half sun/shade days yielded average plants but were nothing in yields compared to the shaded ones...Indoor Fluros(4*40watts) yielded better than the 400w metal halide..These plants love indirect light and mistings every day for optimium growth...J
