DAMMIT! Burnt Grain / (Drier Grain = normal?) Pic

I PCed 3 of my brown rice grain jars for 1 hour. I guess I didnt put enough water in because the glass within the jars almost cracked and the grain on the bottom of the jars were all burnt. Was this because there wasnt enough water? Are they still good to be use? The rice in the middle and top areas of the jar are still damp, I know because I sacrified a jar and checked the wetness.

I wouldn't use it, just start over, its not like you are losing anything by starting over, well besides burnt rice and a couple of hours of preparation. Better luck next time.

Sounds fried on the bottom. Not enough water in the PC & to hot. Start over. Why you using BR instead of rye or bird seed? 6T

Your not letting the jars sit on the bottom of the PC are you? If so put a piece of cloth between the base of the jars and the bottom of the pot.

The grain on the sides of the jar seems to get darker in color, which seems to mean they are getting dry, is this normal?

Having never done whole brown rice I did a little search and found this thread... Brown Rice Tek Thread
I was wondering did you cook your rice pre PC'ing it ? - just trying to eastblish the water content of your jars. ?

Have another go... try reducing PC time to 45 mins rather than 1 hour (after all you cooked it first and that would kill must stuff).
Other than that I don't know. Lets us know how you get on. Don't give up dude

yes. I think it is rather dry. I lost 3 jars with first PC, and I poured one out to check the wetness. Its was damp. The darker brown rice on the sides of the jar was the ones I talked about on my above posts, they are dried out kernels. But besides those, the grain is damp. I took the pic right after the jar came out of the PC, that is y there is some condensation on the top of the jar.

I don't understand why you are using whole brown rice, wouldn't it be easier to just you brf in a cake? I mean you are getting the same nutrients, I guess it may be easier to spawn poo with, but you could just as easily grate up a PF cake and get practically the same thing as you are doing.

Just precook the rice. When the recipe calls for 2 and a 1/4 cups water for 1 cup rice, just use 2 cups.

I did precook the rice with an asian rice cooker.
Skidd, Im using this tek because ive only heard positive outcomes. PF tek utilizes vermiculate which is not a nutritional substrate material. With whole grain brown rice you give myc 100% nutrition ---> bigger mushy.

Thanks. So what does everyone thing about my substrate? Maybe ill just innoculate 1 jar and see if it grows in the next couple of days, if so ill innoculate the rest.

Sounds like a good idea, but how many jars do you have? If you only have like 2 or 3, why not just inoc. them all with 1 cc. They may not show signs of growth for a week or more, if you wait that long to inoculate the rest, contams might get them before your spores do. Just a thought.

IMO the rice should be drier. The grains should stand apart more- there should be more air space in the jar. If you don't mind possibly wasting a syringe. The jars are cheaper then the spores if you're buying them.
