brown rice in a birdseed tek
    #1115809 - 12/06/02 12:52 AM (15 years, 15 days ago)

i was thinking, (bear with me, this is stoner thinking)

if the point of birdseed is to shake and colonize quicker, maybe we should do brown rice/verm in the birdseed tek. soak it, then put in jar, innoculate, then shake when you se mycelium. broad principles allow this to work, is there any reason it shouldnt?

this would allow the non pressure cooker owner to sterilize, since birdseed cant be sterilized with pot and water.(although pot does help many things happen) Nocturnal Overgrow Member #10 strikes twice

Simply adding birdseed to brf/verm will not allow it to be sterilized by boiling.  Sorry, but hey, at least you're thinking when your stoned.

well, i meant to avoid using birdseed, maybe if someone used brown rice. in this sense, it can still be sterilized, but also colonize quick with the shaking tek

May i ask why with BRF you can boil and have a good success rate and not with any sort of grain. Isnt the point to kill of any contams. If boiling kills off most contams with brf why wouldnt it be the same with grain. Thris thread just made me think of this question. I couldnt figure out a answer.

The rice grain doesn?t bear that many bacterial endospores as other grains. I don?t know the reason why though.

Hey i think the reason u use a PC on grain is cause of the pressure, the grains got to get alot of water in it. Correct me if im wrong, cant think strait cause im NOT stoned. working on it though

If you really want to use birdseed try crushing it up to a fine powder and using it in the absence of brf in your cakes with verm. I have heard good things about this and you should still be able to get good results without a PC.

You will have a very difficult time shaking BRF/verm (or even whole rice) in a quart jar.  Good luck.

That is the point of using a whole grain or millet with a 'hard' shell. Once you add flower or crushed grains then it just becomes a sticky, non-shakable mush. Have you ever tried shaking brf/verm? It's like a big glob of mud. I actually had a similar idea when I first started out. Maybe it didn't work out cuz I wasn't stoned though.

ill try this one more time, it seems you dont understand me.

clarification:
there would be no vermiculite
there would be no birdseed
there would be no brown rice FLOUR
there would be whole brown rice taking the place of birdseed in the birdseed tek.

thus you can have a shakable substrate and still sterilize with a pot and water.

this idea was brought about by not all of us having pressure cookers, and wanting to be able to shake the jars, thus spreading mycelium faster creating faster colonization.

thanks for replying all, any suggestions and/or problems with this idea should be posted because i will try this tek, and i want to know if im pissing against the wind, or if i have a good idea

I've done BRF and WBS with no problem so far in pint jars.

2/3 cup WBS
1/3 cup water
1 table spoon of BRF

or no BRF put a 1/4 cup of dung instead of BRF put the jars in the PC it that works good too the jar colonize fast.

shake it all up really good then put it in the PC for 1 1/2 hour at 10 psi with BRF added with dung keep it at 15 PSI is fine.

If you PC at 15psi for 60 Min. it will burn the BRF then it trash time and start over.

It seems the spores attach to the BRF first then start onto the WBS it seems the same with the dung.

LOL.. u totally didnt get it.

He doesnt want to use a PC therefore cant use birdseed/whole grains, but wants a shakable substrate... The question was if he could use whole brown rice kernals since it seems you dont need a pc for BRF. Unfortunately, I'm not really sure, i tried searching for it but couldnt find anything. I know of ppl using white rice.. but i cant remember if they PCed it.. but if my memory serves me right i dont believe that they did. So i think you'll be ok with just steaming them in a pot.

Isn't the reason grains have to be sterilized in a PC because WATER can't get above 212F/100C at regular atmospheric pressure?

Couldn't you just bake DRY grain in a jar at, say 350F, and then add sterilized water, and/or mycelial slurry?

I`ve done brf jars many times.
Including sterilising 2l milk containers.
it works well but better giveup on the idea of shaking the rice.
It doesn`t shake.

350 shouldn't be enough to even lightly toast it.

Yea I know brf doesn't shake. Would whole rice with gypsum and the right water content? I know rice gets pretty sticky, so i don't doubt that it wont.

how do you figure? Anything in the oven will loose considerable amounts of moisture and will eventually burn. It's the same reason you put epson salt in the oven or stale chips.. it's to dry them out. The only way you could not loose the moisture is by closing the jar. Essentially you'd be making a pressure cooker out of your jar. But with them being unregulated.. I don't think they will last too long.
