Exercising Dilemma
    #10130091 -

I've gone through bouts of doing free weights for months and then stopping (for various reasons). About a year ago I had to end a 7/8month stretch of full upper body workouts 3/4 times a week because I began to get a 'twinge' around my left shoulder blade. I went to the Doctor who said it was my posture but I stopped exercising anyway. Gradually it went away.

My pecs, stomach, biceps and triceps are all still quite good, but I'm noticeably smaller/weaker in my lats, deltoids, upper back, upper arm, whatever (dunno those muscle names). I want to be more in proportion with a more balanced strength so I began exercising again around 3 months ago.

This time limiting my exercise just upper back, shoulder, upper arm. The twinge returned and so I went to an osteopath. She said I was fine and gave me a single stretching exercise to do. I have now stopped exercising.

Are there exercises I can do that don't involve free weights that might help to build these areas? Is it worth doing pushups?

Cheers

No dilemma. Pushups are great.  DO 'em lots of different ways, with the hands in different positions. My fav is to have the index finger and thumb tips of the left and right hands touching, lowering the sternum to touch the resulting triangle.

So many different varieties, makes it easy to switch-up the work out.

Pull-ups (overhand grip) will quickly build lats and biceps.  You'll soon see that bicep curls are for the vain gymbodies.

What do you do for your lower body? This is the real question.

Deadlift, squats, dips, chinups, pushups, and bench press is all you really need.  Stick to the big lifts and keep it simple.

The big ones skydog said are good.  Kettle bells are pretty sick too.

"A human being is part of the whole, called by us 'Universe'; a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us.

Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole nature in its beauty.

Nobody is able to achieve this completely but striving for such achievement is, in itself, a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."
