PDU's 100 pushup Challenge (program inside.)
    #11734464 - 12/28/09 09:58 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Ok, so this isn't my program. However, i just came across it and started the other day. I am posting it here so i can track my results and hope to get some other people started too! No excuses - everyone here can do pushups, and there are tiers in this program for all fitness levels.

Do 100 pushups

It is a 6 week program, 3days/week = 30minutes/week. It uses increasing and varying numbers of reps/sets to get stronger with the eventual goal of 100 consecutive pushups.

I started at week 3, because i can currently do around or more than 20 consecutive pushups. Today my sequence was: 12,17,13,13,17 with 1 minute breaks between sets and i was barely able to finish the final 5 of the last set, infact i was quivering - but my chest was bulging after!

For now - doing 100 pushups consecutively seems absolutely totally impossible. But we will see.

Join me on the quest to 100 pushups?!

I've officially joined you. I've also started at week 3 and did the same sequence as you. My arms are beat after that last set. I'm curious to see how this goes..

I'm in.  I've been wanting some chest definition and I love pushups.  THis should be a fun little thing to do before I start the 24kg PM again.

I'll do my initial test tomorrow morning.

I think I will start too. I can do about 15 consecutive pushups right now. I do them on my fists because it hurts my wrists to do them on my palms. I think fist pushups are a little harder so I might start at week 1 still.

I'll start once drinking season is over.

I used to be able to do 30 or so. I did 20 a week or two ago.

I dicovered that site a few months back.  I don't think its realistic to be able to do 100 in six weeks.
After 4 or 5 months, I was able to do 98!  SO close.
Then I got sick and lost intest and now I can only do 80.
But I'm  gonna follow the plan again and see if I can reach the magic 100.

I found doing pushups for a month and then bench press (3x30) for a month worked better than just pushups.
Also, after you can do week six easily, try 30, 50, 70, 50, 30 then at least 70  max.
Good luck,
Gwero

Just did the initial test.  I'm kinda stoned, but was able to pump out 30.  I think i'm going to start on the 3rd rung anyways - but in the >25 column.

I started at 25 pushups a day and months later I was doing sets of 100, wit a total of 500 pushups a workout

so its not impossible! stay consistent and vary your sets. you'll probably surprise yourself as I find increasing pushups each workout much easier than increasing weights

if your triceps are the weak area continue working on diamond cutters. basically work at any of your weak areas so the next workout is better

I'd guess a pushup w/ your hands together directly under your heart in a diamond shape.

Ok day 2 completed;

week 3, day 2, 2nd column:90 second breaks/5sets - 14,19,14,14,19 = 80 pushups

You know, i was suffering this morning because i started doing a new kettlebell exercise yesterday; the clean and press. Extremely tender pectorals and i didn't feel like i was up for it. - Anyways, a couple hours after waking i was up for it - i did it no problem, much stronger than my last set of 72. No muscle twitches!

Feeling good - Anyone else?

I am in. I don't think I will have too much difficulty with it. I do a lot of training, however not much endurance work.

Should be a nice shake-up from the regular routine. Might even help tone.

Welp.  Looks like i'm going to have to revise my starting point.  I did week 3 (3rd column) today and was FINISHED after the 4th set.  I didn't have any strength to even start the 5th set, let alone to do a min of 20 reps.

I'm going to bump down to the 2nd column and go from there.

Eedit:  just went bqck and did my 5th set (after a few min rest).  knocked out 21.  phew.

Day 3:

week3/day3/2nd column: 16,21,15,15,21 = 88

Very brutal - had to slow down and just focus on one pushup at time on the last set. Quivering and shakey for the last 4. In my defense, i am somewhat hungover and not in top shape today, after new years partying.

I am going to take an extra week to do column one in week 4, before doing column 2. Today was close to my max and i guarantee i will reach failure before completing days 2 or 3 in the 2nd column without some extra practice.

I am just doing this every second day, rather than "monday, wednesday, friday" as recommended in the program.

get a deck of cards, multiply each card by 5, face cards are 10.. Aces 15..
before you know it, 100 push up will seem kinda childish..

Today (day2) was rough.  I was super sore yesterday and still sore today.  Got through all the sets (extended rest inbetween 3/4 and 4/5), but my 'max' set was only to 15reps (it wanted 25 out of me).

I stayed at column3 though.  Think i'm going to stay in this column, but repeat week 3 again next week.

Today:  20,25,15,15,15 = 90

I give this program two :thumbup:

I found it on this forum half a year ago or so and made it to.... like week 6 I think.  I never could break the 75 consecutive pushup mark though.

I think I might be doing a full set tomorrow morning, and I'll jump on board with this too.  I'll update here with ya'll.  Maybe that'll keep me going.

I am cycling back, because 88 total pushups was very close to my failure. Currently, doing week 4, column 1 to build some strength before moving to column 2.

Yesterday - 12,14,11,10,16 = 63
Today - 14,16,12,12,18    = 72

I am going to keep doing it 6x/week (or so) rather than 3x, if i can keep it up - my body seems to recover from them quite quickly so far.

Anyone else notice majorly bulging biceps and pectorals after doing 70-80 pushups?

Glad to have you with us youbreakyoubuy!

Is anyone else going to track their progress - common guys!

This is thread #2 in which you've given me the departed's moniker.  :tongue2:  Don't worry it's cool though.

I'll throw my stats up here too.  I predict major disappointment in the morning when I do my initial set.  And yeah, totally get what  you mean by the bulging muscles.  Whenever you're done with a workout and the muscles are hard as rocks when you flex them, it feels great!  Major confidence booster too!

edit for speeling

Well, I didn't do nearly as bad as I was thinking.

49 pushups after a long break.

I'll be on week 5 it looks.  I hope I can make it to 100 this time.

How far do you guys go down for it to be considered a good form pushup?

I'm not sure I'm going down far enough.

DICK PUSHUPS!~!  hahahaha

looks like i need to go down a little deeper.

That's always been my problem with pushups; I have no idea if I'm exercising proper form in the placement of my hands and feet.

I do my hands a little closer than shoulder with.  Feet straight up on my toes.  Keep your body flat like a plank (thats where the abs come in), and go down until you feel you've done a pushup (i've already stated my stopping point)

For me - a pushup is when the elbow joint is a 90 degree angle with the bicep/forearm.

I usually keep my hands close to shoulder width, and sometimes directly under my shoulders, or sometimes under my lats. The latter is much harder.

Okay, did some dick touchers this time and made it to 38, which puts me at week 4 instead of 5.  I forgot how shaky I feel after going until exhaustion.  Feels good.

I guess I'll be starting out in column 3.

Tomorra morning...THIS...BEGINS.

Week 4, column 2, day 1; Highest i've gone.

I was pretty much at failure by 21 on the last set, barely wiggled out the last 4. Tomorrow is a day off.

Does anybody else have problems going from the final set to the max set in the time limit given?  Cause I sure do.  By the end of the last set my muscles strive pretty hard for those last few.  It seems almost impossible to go above that.  But that's what the programs asks of you.  Making that transition is tough.

My muscles are wrecked by the end of set two.  I have to take extended breaks inbetween 3/4 and 4/5.  On every 5th set so far my arms have given out and I had to catch myself w/ my  knees.

My triceps are my weak link.  Abs/chest/back are strong but my tris are weaksauce.

Yeah, I guess that's me too.  Trisoweakosaur :discorex:  I just can't seem to extend them again after I hit the bottom of the dip.  If I avoid hitting the bottom of the pushup cycle, then I can get a lot more gas out of it.  Just the same as pullups to me.  Btw, I've coupled that armstrong pullup program that you posted a while back with this program. :awesome:  Feeling great!
=========
Today I officially started week 4 column 3.  The last few ups of the final set were killer, and I had to extend my wait time between that set and the max set.  In the max set, I only made it 2/3 the way to the "at least" #.   I'll get there sooner or later.

Yeah that armstrong progrma is great.  I'd say that coupled with this would yield great results.  bodyweight exercises are great.

Hmm, I did the "first week" stuff.  Feels good, my upper body definitely could use some working out.

I might try to do the 200 sit ups and 200 squats as well, those are way easier for me.  I can do about 100 sit ups and 100 squats right now, but I can only do 15-20 push ups at once.

Week 4, column 2, day 1:

18,22,16,16,25 = 87

Not so bad with breaks longer than 1 minute. I took 4 minutes between the last sets and finished strong.

This morning wasn't so hot: 25/25/29/25/29.  The last 4 of the last 25 were just pitiful, and then I waited ... like 10 minutes between that and the max set.   I'll get there though.

I am going to week 2. Week one was easy in column 3 but somehow I have a slight feeling I have to repeat week 2 or 3.

But how much anyone has managed to do so far? 50, anyone?

I also tried sit-ups, and to my surprise I am the weakest. I have always had problem with these and I think I am doing it wrong. Way too much harder than push-ups, how is it possible to go 200?`And I don't have body fat or anything.

I've done this before...it's a great way to build up your triceps in your arms, but you also need to do exercises with dumbbells and maybe bench press. Try searching for "P90X" on youtube for some weight training videos.

Also, with the pushups, a friend of mine gave me a really good tip: use phonebooks during your pushup routine to place your hands on, so you have to go down farther to touch the ground with your chin or nose.

I can do about 40 pushups in a row without the phonebooks, maybe 20 in a row with the phonebooks.

also, make sure to stretch for AT LEAST 15 minutes beforehand or the tendons in your armpits will hurt like hell for a couple days afterward.

We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter."  --Max Planck

Body fat has little correlation with strength; Your problem is likely; you do not have strength in the muscles these exercises use - weak core muscles are especially common.

What sort of stretches? I walk my dog and do windmills with my arms before my sets - no soreness.

I'll be doing my set shortly and will post back.

Ok, I am stoked:

week 4, column 2, day 2;

20,25,20,20,28 = 118

It was 90 second breaks, but i took approx. 3 minutes, or maybe more between some sets.

I was surprised i finished this. The last 3 or 4 were a huge struggle but not to the point where my arms would give out or anything. I finished the last with integrity. Before i would finish straggling my ass.

Previously i would just lay on the ground with my ear on the floor and arms by my sides during a break. - Now, i get up and shake out my arms and wander around a little bit, it seems to help alot.

Day 1 to 2 was a jump of 21 pushups. Day 2 to 3 is a jump of only 12.

you can train your quick twitch muscles to do rapid push up, when I was in the army I could blast 200 quick twitch push ups..

do you do any changing of hand positions. Like diamonds, place your hand in the center of your chest, make a diamond with your hand Thumb to thumb, index finger to index finger..

then you can do wides also..

glad to see your making progress..

Week 4, column 2, day 3: completed -

23,28,23,23,33 = 130

Today was actually no problem. I barely struggled towards the end. Every set was stronger than my sets 2 days ago.

Although i am not terribly vain - it is very rewarding to get up and see the definition in my chest, shoulders, and abdominals after doing 100+ pushups!

Feeling great.

I will be doing week 4, column 3 next.

I'm in! I did my initial test about a week ago and got 26, so I decided to start week 3 middle column, but after hitting the first day of that today I'm going to downgrade to the far right column of week 2. I've been more of an aerobic man most of my life and have been wanting to get into some muscle training, so this is perfect.

When are you all doing the exhaustion test after each week? I figure the best would be the day after day 3 then take a day off and start the next week.

I even got one of my brothers and my room mate to start! this program is spreading like wildfire. Great idea PDU

the "swing" is an exercise done using a kettlebell.  provides vigorous cardiovascular workout while simultaneously working a fuckton of muscle groups.

ah yes it apparently also makes the testicular muscles much firmer.
ias I cycle a lot, and apart from that i think push and sit ups should be sufficient to uphold my excessive muscularity.

Thanks for the link PDU...it is very well timed

I myself have been in a deep funk for approximately 2 years now and need to find a way to turn it around.  All of the details are not necessary at this point, let's just say there has been a lot of laziness, social isolation and depressed, disturbing thoughts.

I don't know how to solve all of it, but it has become glaringly obvious to me that my lack of physical stimulation is a one of the reasons for my depression.  Maybe a simple program like this, where I don't have to leave the house, will help instill some of the drive necessary to start feeling a little better.

I will be reading through the program and taking the test tonight so I can set up a schedule.  I don't care if i can do 100 push ups in 6 weeks or 6 months, as long as I make a plan and stick to it.

I'm moving on though. Testing my max either tomorrow or the day after, depending on how I feel about it.

Ok, i am back:

week 4, day 2, column 3:

I wrote 26 for the last set instead of 36 - so when i realized i went and did a second last set or 36;

25,29,25,25,26,36 = 166

Meaning i've made considerable gains. The last 6 were very close to failure.

Good workout - feeling great.

How fast do you guys do these push-ups?

I've been doing push-ups on and off for 12 or 13 years now.  I always did them very slowly (up to 20 secs./rep.) concentrating on form.  Though I could never do many (say, never more than 30 going at a more 'normal' gym-class rate), I did bulk-up considerably.

When I began this program a couple of weeks ago I decided to toss the slow, very controlled reps out the window -- no way I'd even make it up to 50 at that rate.  I now find myself going very quickly, nearly to the point of forsaking form.  For instance, I don't bear my weight on the way down, but instead let gravity do its fine work unimpeded.

My progress has been considerable nonetheless. Today I met my baseline maximum of 25 reps after having done 4 sets, a total of 85 reps.

What do you think? Am I on the road to success, or am I just pussying out?

You are good. I don't go SUPER fast, but quite fast - i just make sure to get full 90 degree angles on my forearm/biceps on the decline and full extension on the incline.

In the past i have kept my hands more square to or behind my chest - but i can not meet the #'s using that, so i put my hands slightly infront of my chest, which makes it easier.

Use your best judgement. Once i complete week 6, i am going to re-do this program using stricter protocols. Right now i am using extended breaks....

If you are receiving benefits and making # gains, that is indicitive of progress, Right?

Skipped yesterday - 2 hard kettlebell workouts the days previous left me in need of recuperation. As always, feel stronger than ever after a day off.

Week 4, column 3, day 3: DONE.

29,33,29,29,40 = 160

<--- same as last day, but 1 less set!

Not following anysort of time protocol - i was taking 3-5 minute breaks between the first 3 sets, made lunch, came back and finished the last 2. The last 2 reps were shakey but complete.

Not looking forward to another exhaustion test.

Starting fresh in Week 5, column 1, day 1 - will move up through week 1,2 + 3 building strength along the way.

Forgot to do my exhaustion test today, but instead did todays pushup set from beginning to end, twice.

17,19,15,15,20,17,19,15,15,20 = 172.

Meaning an easy gain of 10 pushups compared with my hardest day in week 4.

Feeling good - but nowhere near success with 100 consecutive.

hehe, already on week 2 after since i started, plus ive been doing to odd reps here and there on days off, im sure i went throiugh day 2 and day 3 without a rest and started week 2 without a rest aswell.

Im about to do some reps before bed.

The first day was hell, but now that im on day 2 of week 2 im recovering much faster and not ending up so sore and stiff the next day.

Ok; week 5, column 1, day 2;

(10,10,13,13,10,10,9,25) x 2 =  200

Doubled it up, because column 1 is too easy. Assuming more volume now will make the bigger sets to come, a little bit easier.

The 2 full sets were 30 minutes apart. Grease the groove style, as its known in hardstyle kettlebell lifting.

Well in the situation i posted above, i would say doing twice the number of reps over a longer period of time, would obviously translate into increased strength gains.

GTG (grease the groove) is based off the idea that higher workloads/more reps build strength and muscle more effectively than going full steam and running out before reaching the desired number of reps.

Going full steam is more of a cardio/mind/endurance feat, than one of strength.

I believe GTG is an approach typically used by someone of lesser conditioning, and going "anaerobic" or "full steam" is something practiced by people who have already mastered their discipline.

Maybe that was a confusing way of explaining it.

Wasn't going to workout because i've been sick, but i've just started a workout and feel alright.

Pushups: Week 5, column 1, day 3;

13,13,15,15,12,12,10,30 = 120 total.

Looks like column 2 is going to be considerably more challenging.

Not gonna follow the program but want get fit so I'll do something like it.

I used to be able to do 30/35.

Just did 25,10,10.

Might do more later but will try and up it everyday.

I'll eat through the pain if there's any tomorrow.

Eating and doing more push ups is the best cure for soreness isn't it?

I'm a bit late to join in, but here it goes.

Started this past Saturday, the 30th.

Results for the initial test were 15 push ups.

I started with Week 1, Day 1, in the third column, 60 second rest periods:
Week 1, Day 1, 2010-01-30, Column 3: 10, 12, 7, 7, 12
Max 12
Total 48

Continued today with Week 1, Day 2, third column, 90 second rest periods:
Week 1, Day 2, 2010-02-01, Column 3: 10, 12, 8, 8, 25
Max 25
Total 63

The first day was tough.  I was struggling by the last set.

Muscles have been sore since, but I performed much better on day 2.  Even though I was sore, there was hardly any struggle, and I pulled through 25 on the last set.

Makes it a lot easier to keep on track when you have a plan and structure.  I'm going to do my best to just stick to the program.  Joining in on this thread should make things even easier.

Good luck, everyone.

Week 5, day 1, column 3;

I started my sets, went to make a smoothie quickly before work and forgot to finish them.

so i just did the last 2 sets when i got home, after 10 hours of hauling boxes around a warehouse.

36,40,30,30,30,40 = 205 = the most yet!

Might have reached failure if i did them all at once. I've had a nagging sickness for the past week and have been feeling really run down.

Going to do an exhaustion test after day 3 this week.

I'm still on week four Column two. I've been doing "day three" the past few days. At first it was a struggle, but now it is getting easier. I'm about to do it again and then hopefully after this I can move up to week 5.

Started the second week today.  60 second rest periods:
14, 14, 10, 10, 20
Max 20
Total 68

That one was a little rough.  Maybe because of the one-minute rests, down from two.

Feels good, though.

I'm not quite following it but I've gone from being able to do 20 to 30 in a week.

Has a lot to do with energy I'd imagine.

Ok, i am back. Did GTG pushup sets a few days in Hawaii and other than that, vegged out and ate shitty food.

Backtracked 1 day - Today; Week 5, column 3, day 1:

36,40,30,30,40,30 = 206 total.

Took about 40 minutes - obviously extended breaks.

Ok, back at it. Week 5, day 2, column 3;

19,19,22,22,18,18,22,45 = 185

Total is less than last day, but the last set was super painful.

Near failure for the last 6 reps. The last rep was at failure but i struggled it out.

Everyone else still keeping up?

This program clearly doesn't work as claimed - there is absolutely no way i could be doing this with the alotted breaks ... but with persistance i am confident i will reach the goal. However, i suspect it will take months more to do.

I've been slacking. Just feeling exhausted after working out with kettlebells and doing 50 hour work weeks.

Got drunk and wrestled ALOT in a cement parkade this weekend. I am all beat up - will start again when recovered, tomorrow hopefully.

Rest is as important as the workout, make sure you're getting enough quality stuff and not over doing it.

No worries, i know this. Whenever i end up with 1 day active rest and 2 days off - i feel sooo rejuvenated and re-invigored.

I just shouldn't be getting stupidly drunk, picking on people and getting my ass handed to me - 2 weekends in a row.

LOL it's happens to the best of us. I was arm wrestling not long since and it put me out of action for a few days,,.
I'm still trying to bulk so i need a rest every other day, and i only really strain each muscle group once per week.
Muscles grow when you're chilling, not in the gym,,, as they say,,.

Oh you don't know how happy it makes me, to know its not just me!

On the other hand - despite staying in bed late, feeling defeated and like shit. I muscled out a kettlebell workout, made a healthy lunch and feel like a million bucks just before i head to work.

Aye it's always satisfying finishing a workout when you couldn't really be bothered, especially if you're trying to stick to a routine.
I get quite aggressive with myself sometimes because i can feel the laziness biting and i just won't stand for it anymore.
Fucking scream and push through lol.

Leaves me feeling fantastic,,.

I was finally ably to double my max, from 25 on 09/01/2010 to 50 today.  I was fairly diligent, completing 34 workouts in 14 weeks.  I'm glad to be making steady progress, but slightly annoyed at their claim that one should go from 0 to 100 in 6 weeks.

Good job me Roy - i had a similar gain in about 5 weeks, however i do agree, 6 weeks is a ridiculous number.

I was doing GTG incline pushups last week and would like to start this again - although probably won't get around to it until after summer.

Yeah, I guess I'm just not talented.  Sniffle.

Out of curiosity, PDU, did you strictly adhere to the recommended rest periods, or did you 'grease the groove,' as they say?

Oh well, anyone care to estimate how long it'll take me to get to 100?

Hey man - we started out at different points of fitness. No sniffling!

There's no way i can do it with the 30-90 second rest periods, i would give it 2-5 minutes depending on the number and length of the sets. I was planning on going back and doing the program properly after i completed "gtg style."

It's going to have to wait awhile. I've got a hernia surgery next month...
