The right of my desk will be the grow space.

that will be great for your cacti, im interested to see how things go for you since i have been considering buying one of those so i can grow more cacti indoors, and start more pepper seeds.

i have some compact fluorescent bulbs that i use for my indoor cacti/vegetable seedlings, they work great and put out hardly any heat at all.

I'm trying to figure out where to position the bulb... Could I just keep it near ground-level with something reflective near the top ?

I'd imagine you'd want the most intense light shining down from above the plants, but i have limited cacti/lamp knowledge.,, no reflector with it ?

normaly the lights shud hang from above  but alot of light wud be wasted. if u stand ,if u can light at least 2feet away from light so it lights up the side  of the plants then use as u said a reflector to bounces light around back of the plant mylar or at a foil, mylar reflects most lite at 99 percent . one thing i wud say if ur only lighting up one plant the running cost are high so get more to spread ur costs out. keep checking every day or so when ur going at the start so u know it aint too close or problems with heat build up.

I have a few cacti that are going to grow under it, and I should get more plants soon :laugh:, so I think it's worth it!

(I have other cacti that are not shown on this pic)

I was also thinking of maybe throwing in 1 or 2 marijuana plants.

Do you know how much it would cost a year to keep this light running for 7 or 8h a day? I did some calculation that gave me $90-100 (considering 1 kwh = $0.08) a year but I'm not sure if I calculated right.

Its hard to visualize your space,, it looks so small in that last pic. I bet it gets hot behind there..

I'd want the lamp up above the plants and if you're thinking about weed you're gonna have to light proof the area around them somehow..

The light will be up above them since it seems to be the best, this is only temporary, I'll have to drill holes in the wall to make it stand above all the plants, my set up isn't done yet.

The grow space is about 2.5ftx4ft or so.

cost depends on ur suplier he mj wud pay for the runnning costs easliy. one thing to remeber u light it bright 30k lumens about  but sun light kicks ass at about 100k so if u can get cati at least out doors they will luv u for it. u may need to acclimbatise ur plants to hid or day light for the start check for discolouration.

That's a small space for that much light, but it will be fine, check for heat buildup. The cost sounds about right, good luck.

We'll have AC in our house this summer and I keep my windows open most of the time, so it should be fine hopefully for heat!

I believe it's a ballast, that thing must weight 50lbs.

Wallplug---->Ballast--->long wire-->lightbulb

that's basically how it is

And according to wikipedia: "An electrical ballast (sometimes called control gear) is a device intended to limit the amount of current in an electric circuit."

Does this look like a good setup?

Yeah, I'm going to buy chains later and a hook to hang it from above while still being able to adjust it, this is just temporarily.
