Building an HPS light

Can someone tell me what parts I'll need. Theres a lot of them, and I don't know what each part does. I'm kinda retarded. Help please.

A fully operating HPS unit consists of:

* A power cord from the wall outlet to the ballast box.
* The ballast box which contains the capacitor, ignitor, and usually a transformer.
* Power cord from ballast box to bulb socket.
* Bulb
* Reflector where the socket and bulb is housed

The newbie should not be wiring his own ballast without proper knowledge because these things can be an extreme electrical hazard if wired improperly. Also, the ballast kits don't provide a housing for the components, which you need if you don't want an electrical hazard in your home.

My advice is to buy a plug and play unit, at least with your first light...or learn a dickload of electrical theory, heat transfer, reflection angles and send plans to a steel forger for your own housing unit, reflector, and wire the light yourself.

Plug and play 400w hps lights can be purchased on ebay for approximately $100, which is alot more practical and less expensive than a DIY reflector, ballast housing unit, etc. Plus, it saves you peace of mind knowing that a professional put the unit together, not somebody with little knowledge on the subject.

Thanks man, I just needed some more info before i baught anything. I'm probably gonna go ahead and just buy a full system because I don't trust myself to not burn my shit down.

No problem. Shop around, there are varying prices for almost identical lighting systems on the net and in hydro stores. I've found better deals including shipping on the internet than at hydro shops.
