SAVE THE CACTI!
    #10111622 -

Hey, I grabbed some cacti while I was at Lowe's today. They were so sad looking, and I had to, at least attempt to, save them.

I also found a cereus monstrose in good shape.

The ones I saved are in critical condition. I need your help!

The cereus monstrose (I believe that's what it is) is in the front. I think its crested too! A wierd, but cool find, and for $2.77 a steal!

Ok, now the problem. The two other guys, the grafts, are what concern me. I don't care for the scions much, but if I can save them, cool. I'd really like to save the rootstock. The rootstock is visibly wilted and unhappy. They were also leaning at a steep angle when I grabbed them. I had to prop them upright, they were also soft (I mean seriously soft, think whipped cream, almost, they just barely held together), and I had to hold them upright on the ride home. It was a horror story, but hopefully I can save them. Any ideas?

Please help these poor cacti, neglected by the Lowe's giant!

Thanks.

Yeah, I forgot to say I was gonna take them off. I literally just got home when I posted this. Here's a pic now that they're gone.

Better? I think so. Looks more dignified now.

You can possibly save the scions if you regraft them in time, but the hylocereus stocks are done for. I'd be amazed if they make it

Alright. That's kind of a bummer. You think there is anything that I can do to save these things? I'd really like to save the Hylocereus rootstocks. Damn, that's a bummer, so much for being the hero...

They look pretty bad, but there could always be a chance.
From the pics, the damage is hard to assess, but I'll try.
They look shriveled as hell, but I dont think its from lack of water because the scions look healthy. Are they shriveled at all, or are they plump? cant really tell from the photo.
It looks to be either severe sunburn, rot, or a combination of the two. A lot of times, the employees at those garden centers water their succulents everyday along with the other plants, leading to rot in many of the less hardy specimens.

Alright, well, doesn't mean I'm not going to try! But yeah, it's a pretty desperate fight. Oh well. If I manage to save them, cool, if not, bummer. If the scion drops a pup, or I cut it off, could it root itself? Or is there no chance of that?

It needs to be grafted since it can't produce its own chlorophyl

The plants are definitely shrivelled, one is almost transparent. But one still has a slight hue of color, and it is stronger than the other, so I'm hoping that one can make it, if both don't. One is plumper than the other. I can't be sure about the overwatering though, when I grabbed them, the soil was bone dry, and beginning to compact, away from the container sides. Although it may have been overwatering, I can't be sure.

I see... Thanks.

If I were to lop off the scions, would the hylocereus have a better chance of surviving? Or would the shock of the scion being cut off be too much for them?

Its hard to say.
But if it were me, I would just repot them immediately, give them some water, and keep them in filtered light for the time being.
The scions could be taking vital energy from the stock, so removing it could possibly be a good thing, but theres no way of telling.

Those rootstocks are DEAD.

That monstrose plant seems a crested Euphorbia.

Please save the scions.

I don't have any other rootstock at the moment. When I get some I could attempt to save the scions. Do you think they will survive until this weekend? Then I could get more rootstock.

crested Euphorbia huh? All it says on the container is cereus monstrose cv. 'Petra'. But it was a cacti that was one of a kind there, and it was cheap, and cool looking, so I nabbed it.

If the scions survive until I get more rootstock, I will try my hardest to save them. If not, I will grab another, healthier one, to honour their memory.

Thanks.
