No way I'd be awake right now otherwise. What a fucking nightmare this is going to be.

Oh shit, I just remembered I have it too!  Fuck.  I have to get an extension cause its on the day of my final, but I already got an extension and they only give you one.  No way Ill let those fuckers make me miss my final and not graduate though - id rather do their penalty; be it fine or jail time.

I honestly dont mind it either, I think I would be a good juror.  But last time I told them Im a student and what do they do - they select me during the semester again... idiots.

So are you actually on a jury?  Tells us all about it if you are!

I just have to go to as part of a juror selection process. There is no way they will choose me to actually serve on a jury. Not because I'm a dirty stinking hippy, but I'm pretty sure that people whose parents are both attorneys rarely get selected.

The process of having to go down to the courthouse and sit around to be screened to potentially be a juror sucks.

However, I thought the actual process of sitting on a jury was really interesting.  I had a rather boring case, but seeing the legal system and a couple of lawyers in action was very interesting IMO.

I was on Jury for a murder trial, it was quite interesting! Besides having to drive down to the City and pay for parking it was a really great experience.

I'm actually on recess right now, so I'm excited to see this thread! I'm on jury duty a couple days a week... for the next three months!

This is a small southwestern town. People are poor here, and poverty sometimes translates into small theft, drunk driving, domestic violence. The Magistrate Court has traditionally been the court of petty crimes, the police court.  I don’t consider driving intoxicated or beating one’s girlfriend petty, but the court does.

Because the population of my county is tiny, yet filled with raucous Friday night saloon hopping, we have a bit of a problem when it comes to seating a jury. Too many small-time cases. Not enough jurors. So, the court came up with (to them) an ingenious solution. Getting a juror’s summons equals six months commitment, four days a week from January through June or July through December. The judge won’t dismiss you unless Pope Benedict himself calls in on your behalf.

I tried to get out of duty with a song and dance about how busy I am, how my employer would economically suffer without my daily input.

“I don’t care if you publish the fuckin’ New York Times, honey,” the judge ruled. He looks like a mouse, a tiny man, with an overgrown handlebar mustache and a constant bow tie. He didn’t look at me as I made my case. He’s heard it all before.

I call the court the evening before each Monday - Thursday, call the special Jurors’ Hotline. A bored female voices tells me whether I need to report for duty the next day. I’ve had a few weeks without sitting in the juror’s box, and a few weeks where my butt has called it home. I’m starting to wonder just who is on trial in this courtroom!

I’m on a drunk driving case today. Motorcyclist versus Police Officer. One man’s word against another. What will I vote?

We found the motorcycle guy NOT GUILTY.

The police officer just wasn't believable. We were able to watch the video that rolls once the emergency equipment is activated. After arresting the guy - who didn't seem impaired at all - the policeman ran four stop signs. We (the jury) thought, after examining all of the evidence, that the policeman had it out for motorcycle riders.  :whack:

pretty much, if you dont show up you can be charged with contempt
and jailed or fined, if you do show up you get like $25 per day and
your employer has to pay you for any time missed

felons and people not registered to vote are excluded

Yeah, no doubt. And the truly funny thing is that the police officer.... lives three houses down from me! This is a tiny town, only six of us sit on the jury plus one alternate. The entire pool is about sixty people, and sometimes I arrive for jury and am sent home. This is my eleventh case since January 1. You can only get Magistrate Court duty once in your life.

I get paid minimum wage (7.50 an hour here) and my employer has to pay me my regular wages. I'm on salary, so it doesn't matter. The extra change is nice, and I have learned more about this town than I ever wanted to know.

I had jury duty for the first time last year.  I was actually hoping to get on an interesting case.  But instead I just sat on my ass in a room with 100 other people for eight hours.  At the end of the day I was dismissed without being asked a single question and paid $10 for my time.  Meanwhile parking downtown cost $14!

Same. My panel (35 people or so) got assigned to a case which needed 12 jurors. Thankfully, I was not selected. I don't even have to go tomorrow. The 12 people that were selected could potentially be there all day every day this week. Parking is free.
