Winter supply

Last windrow completed, air dried to get the moisture content down & now trying to figure out how to get 16 tons ( :smirk:WTF was I thinking - except thats what it took to get it cost effective) of perfected custom made mushroom compost safe, dry & stored in a shed. Off to the bag supplier of a feed store to see just how big of bags they have. Grow log to follow -- after it's stored away safe) 6T :tongue:
 

EDIT --I realize now it was a mistake to have made this post, or at least the amount of what was made. I would delete it. But that would leave the rest of the thread hanging & make me look like an ass-hole . Please do not PM me, requesting a bag of this compost. I am not set up as a vendor, nor wish to be one.

the drying is going to be a bitch. Wouldn't you have to pasturize it to stop the composting process? You did get the materials for free right? cause cost would be a bitch otherwise. I could probably get a ton or two from the stables around my house. Would probably hove too high of shit content because they are boarding stables. I used to work at them shoveling shit, but that was long before this hobby.

Everybody in the OMC is always looking for the perfect bulk substrate, at an affordable price. I did the same thing for months on end. I combed numerous composting & hummus making business's, only to find their products were not 100% suitable (lacking 1 thing or another).

I inquired to several commercial mushroom operations, trying to find one that was willing to sell, suitable fresh mushroom compost. Only to find, they use what they make & have no interest in selling it, until it is spent.

Okay, what next when looking for the perfect substrate? Well, there is software that calculates the content & nutrient value of differing material you might use. So, you gather that up & do some calculations. Once you think you have the perfect recipe. The next step is to that find premium raw material. Which is no small task in it's self.

Then find someone, who has one of these;

who for a FEE would perform the windrowing for you, on their site.

Then purchase & gather up the raw material & get it there. In this instance, premium quality wheat straw, cow & horse manure, vegetable & fruit produce refuse & spent micro/brewery grain were the primary bulk organic ingredients. None of which were found near each other & all of which had to purchased, loaded & trucked to the composting site.

Then you have it made, monitored & tested, to insure it's quality & that it contains no pathogens. Then, have it wide windrowed, to get the moisture content down, to stabilize it for storage & trammel screened to get its finished size & texture correct.Then have it loaded & transported to the storage site, bag it & store it where it will remain dry & uncontaminated.

If you count up all the time, labor, material, freight, windrowing & associated cost. This was no quick or inexpensive endeavor.

Regardless of all that. If one were to mail order vend the product, you would have advertising, accounting & handling the logistic costs of getting orders out.

But, forget all that for a moment.

The BIG KINK is 1st class mailing costs; which are: West coast to east coast per 10 pound package USPS airmail rate. Zones 1 & 2 = $6.28 -- Zone 3 = $7.57 -- Zone 4 = $9.10 -- Zone 5 = $11.01 -- Zone 6 = $12.50  Zone 7 = $14.17 -- Zone 8 = $18.14.

You getting the picture? I doubt enough people would be willing to pay XXX for the product, plus XXX postage. Considering that fact, the market is to limited to make vending this product worthwhile, or profitable, considering all involved.

This type mushroom compost could be produced much cheaper. Resulting in significant product cost reductions. But to that would require a SIGNIFICANT investment in land required (properly zoned), necessary facilities, the equipment, materials, management & labor.

So, as of yet no "vending" is in sight. I did this to see if it could be done. A few people, head shops & potential kit makers committed to buy a large percentage of it. If it turned out as I expected. Which it did.  So, this go around. I may cover the cost. What next, who knows?

  Hell I'll buy some, but I ain't paying for no airmail prices.  *lol*  If you want to part with some my monkey would probably buy anywhere between 2XX and 3XX lbs. 
    If it is as good as your research might indicate it'll be a sure winner.

Those postage prices, where did you get them? Is that suposed to be through USPS? Last I new USPS charged a flat rate by weight and the zone it was being sent to didn't matter. But I haven't worked for them in over a year so maybe things have changed *shrug*
