Compost Recipes?
    #542511 - 02/06/02 12:51 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all,

I used some store bought cow dung for my last run and had some good results. Ihave never been good with casings, and I think what the dung did was supply water and nutrients to everything. I did not have giant shrooms but some nice flushes before the mold took over. Anyway, I have access to some horse dung which I have already taken from a local field. The problem is, the dung was from a stall ?in which the horses are temporarily in, and it has the smell of urine. Is this shit shot? I also haev access to straw and wood shavings, should I mix these in with the compost before cooking? Its basically the piss in the shit that I worry about, I hate even thinking of working with it beacuse it smells so bad. Should I soak it? Sorry for all these questions, but I just want to make some ideal dung because I believe I have access to some quality goods.
Peaceage

i was told to only get crispy dried patties instead of fresh ones, i don't know anything about the piss messing things up, but what you could do is what they told me to do with fresh patties, just set them outside in the sun for a week or so until the get crispy and dry and loose the ammonia smell, they shouldn't smell of anything...if you got a bunch you could just throw them in your composter and let them decompose some until spring time so you can start an outdoor bed

If the urine smell you are refering to is an ammonium smell (which I assume it is) then it will most likely affect the growth of your mushies. Just allow the patties to dry completely and then leech them. Keep washing the patties with water until you do not smell any ammonium. Then you can proceed as usual.
