Produce worm compost in a box for substrate usage?
    #2267856 - 01/24/04 10:49 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Hi,
I'm not sure, if "?dvanced Cultivation" ist the right place to post this question.
Has anyone good links for or experience with creating a small wormcompost-producing box for a single househould's biological waste? As I've read, this can be done without malodor. Is that true? It would be very cool, I could maybe use the product for my shaggymanes. And I would not have to carry down the waste four storeys.
Please share your experience, if you know anything about the topic.

Hey Friend, I do worm composting. Check out his link. My box is almost ready to harvest, lots of goodness in there.

Check out link: http://www.cityfarmer.org/wormcomp61.html

If you have anyquestions, feel free to ask.

I have done it for years -thats a good link
it's easy just give the worms bedding so they can retreat for the heat of the compost and let the box drain.

Here is a step-by-step pictorial on building your own vermicomposting bin.

Thanks for your replies!
I already looked for a fisher supply store to buy the worms. I think they might have the right ones. I will do it! Can I turn my used substrate-blocks (even shitake beech chip blocks) to rich compost, if I reduce them to small pieces? I can imagine, that there are not only shrooms, but also some plnts, that would love the worm castings.

you can grow oysters on used shitake blocks (at least if you're using a supplemented chips/sawdust formulation similar to Stamets' and others). Dry them out, pulverize them, re-sterilize (for longer than usual), and spawn with osyters. And if you want to be really cool, when the oysters are spent, you can dry those blocks out, pulverize them, resterilize, and spawn with S. rugusoannulata (best if used for outdoor inoculum). Paul Stamets (of course) talks about this idea of species sequencing of substrate in his 3rd edition of GG&MM.
