OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- A police officer was battling for his life and three more were dead after a parolee with an "extensive criminal history" opened fire at a routine traffic stop and hours later gunned down members of a SWAT team searching for him.

The gunman was also killed Saturday, capping a day of violence that the Oakland Police Department said was the worst in its history. Never before had three police officers died in the line of duty on the same day.

"It's in these moments that words are extraordinarily inadequate," said Mayor Ron Dellums at a somber news conference Saturday night.

The mayhem began that afternoon, when two motorcycle patrol officers stopped a 1995 Buick sedan in east Oakland, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. The driver opened fire, killing Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, and gravely wounding Officer John Hege, 41.

The gunman then fled on foot, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland closed to traffic.

About two hours later, officers got an anonymous tip that the gunman was inside a nearby apartment building.

A SWAT team had entered an apartment to clear and search it when the gunman shot them with an assault rifle, police said.

Sgt. Ervin Romans, 43, and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, 35, were killed and a third officer was grazed by a bullet, police said.

SWAT team members returned fire, killing 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon of Oakland, Acting Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said. Officer Hege suffered brain damage and may not survive, his father, Dr. John S. Hege, said late Saturday.

"It is a stunning thing to face," he said.

Grieving officers at the police station hugged and consoled each other. People left four bouquets of white roses under a granite memorial wall inside the building lobby that lists 47 officers killed in the line of duty. The wall shows the last officer killed in Oakland was in January of 1999.

Police said Mixon wielded two different weapons. One gun was used at the first scene and an assault rifle was used at the apartment building where he was hiding.

Jordan said Mixon had an "extensive criminal history" and was wanted on a no-bail warrant.

"(Mixon) was on parole and he had a warrant out for his arrest for violating that parole. And he was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon," said Oakland police Deputy Chief Jeffery Israel.

Police said they did not know exactly why the officers initially stopped the suspect, but said it apparently was a routine traffic stop.

People lingered at the scene of the first shooting. About 20 bystanders taunted police.

Tension between police and the community has risen steadily since the fatal shooting of unarmed 22-year-old Oscar Grant by a transit police officer at an Oakland train station on Jan. 1.

That former Bay Area Rapid Transit officer, Johannes Mehserle, has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday. Violent protests erupted on the streets of Oakland in the weeks after Grant's death, further inflaming tensions.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger planned to fly to Oakland on Sunday from Washington, D.C., to meet with police and Mayor Dellums, the govenor's office said.

well, its ok, since he was on parole for felony offenses, especially assault, he was not allowed to obtain ANY gun under the current laws, so both were obtained illegally by him, showing any ban on such would NOT have stopped him from getting it, or any gun for that matter, since he had 2.  And this is also california, they have the harshest gun laws of any state as far as i know, assault rifles near being banned already, and it sure seems to have helped stop the criminal from getting his hands on them :rolleyes:

either way, some crazy shit, i would NOT want to be a police officer in Oakland, i have an uncle who runs an entertainment park there (go carts, paintball, arcade, etc.) and he says he has seen 12 year olds driving on the go cart track and have handgun ammo fall out of their pockets...

Every time we applaud the police for excessive force or the criminals for murdering law enforcement, we're deepening the divide between civilians and police.

I didn't applaud thier death, i merely took pleasure in hearing that three little piggies are no longer in this realm. I have the right to hate cops, because they willingly accept the right to kill people for a paycheck. And even if they never pull the trigger they still make a commitment to blindly enforce laws they often disagree with. One of my childhood friends will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for a victimless crime. And guess who put him there, an organization that strikes the fear into everyone of you, leaving you fully convinced that we couldnt live in a world without them. fuck pigs

absolutely, and it should be the same in civilian life, while
cops like to claim they arent civilians, they certainly arent
military the problem is that it's the police that have widened
the gap between us and them, it's their fraternal mentality that
does it, cops look out for cops in most instances, domestic
battery for instance, cops will talk a woman out of pressing
charges if she's married to a cop, they'll explain away the
behavior as stress and the dangers of a job and any number of
other things, they'll get the guy out of the house for a night
but rarely are charges files, since cops dont live by the laws
they enforce, they are the ones widening that gap

also look at what transpired in that particular instance, cops
fired 21 shots, no one was hit, the home owner fired 4, 4 cops
were hit but not injured because of their ballistic vests

It's our duty to make law enforcement accountable for their actions. As a society in general I think our attempts at law enforcement accountability are feeble at best.

I propose 3-5 man regulator cells that monitor police channels to intercept arrests.

Monitor and interdict.

Cops should be equally liable for their misdeeds as average citizens. If they murder someone they should be accountable. If they start firing at an innocent person, and that person defends themselves and hurts them, then that person should not face any repercussions. People forget that policeman are citizens just like you and me. But in this country the police are above the law. They are the Law.

The first responders soo to speak are the first targets.


There is a organization already watching the police  called copwatch...look it up.

that's great except the system is generally closed to civilian
oversight, they're awarded lesser punishment because of their
career in law enforcement, and unless subpoenaed for litigation,
the records are restricted and even then there's no guaranteed
that anything will be there because of the way the system works
on their behalf both officially and off the record

I'm of the belief that a cops and lawmakers deserve 3x the
punishment that a civilian would get, something that would have
you spending 5 years in the state pen should have them spending
15 years to the door

Cops can get away with some of the most ridiculous shit in the world. I work at  law firm, and we have a case of  cop who killed a client with a tazer because he seemed like a "threat." The client seemed like a "threat" because his girlfriend fainted in the middle of the street and he freaked out, screaming for help. He ran into the police who proceeded to tazer him, and grab him by the arm, flipping him on his back on the cement. He died instantly. And the police say tht "it was justified." Bullshit, that cop is  murderer.

there was a similar taser death last year or the year before, a kid
'fell' from a bridge and was lying beside the road not moving, cops
tasered him because he was non compliant when they told him to get up

in memphis a cop was arrested for a homocide charge because he
caused the death of someone he pulled over, the officers bond was
set at only $5000

My favorite movie theater (In chicago, not oakland) is set up the same way.

Overstuffed couches, chairs, and loveseats.  Full food and bar menu, you can order from a keypad at your seat and they'll buzz you when it's ready.

we had one in atlanta that was like that, opened in the mid 70s
and closed down in the late 90s, $1 movies, free popcorn, no key
pad for ordering, just a button that got pushed a lot when you
set your beer down
