Late case BRF cakes?
    #9935009 -

Hello cultivators:
A question that hasnt been asked, but probably has an obvious answer-

Is it advisable to late case BRF cakes?
Lingzhi will be using a shotgun FC with a PC fan on a timer for FAE and perlite for RH, with ambient light provided.  Strain is GT, which is a prolific fruiter.  Just didnt know if anyone had any experience late casing a brf cake casing.  As some teks advise not spawning to bulk substrate with cakes and some do, for now Lingzhi plans to just dunk the colonized cakes, break them up, wait for colonization in a baking tin, and then either late case after pins form or case regularly.  So is this a recipe for increased yields or just asking for trouble?

Thanks for your input.

i just started my cakes yesterday. im gonna crumble them and spawn them to coir/ spent coffee grinds. people i talk to do the exact same and have had success. not too sure about that late casing layer IMO. just wait for others.

I just did it with and without casing layer def use a casing layer. I had bigger flushed and larger fruits.

It's not advisable to crumble cakes unless you are going to spawn them to something... it weakens the myc network and slows things down without adding any foreseen benefit.  Some may argue surface area, but if any is gained it's minimal and not worth the risk.

My advice would be to keep the cakes intact and do a DEC'ing after a dunk.  You can roll them if you want, but I don't usually point people in that direction... it's up to you.

Late casing is meant for highly rhizomorphic fruiting surfaces that will produce knots-a-plenty on it's own... the late casing helps keep evaporation from the surface at a slower pace which is where the fruits pull from most closely while providing a micro climate for those pins to form.  It also helps soak up/reduce condensation directly on the fruiting surface while letting the substrate breathe... It's not for everyone of course like most things, but I like it.

Cakes are not usually very rhizomorphic so the early applied DEC'ing provides a non-nutritious substance for the rhizo's to grow into which helps with knotting.  It also allows for a reservoir that you can water if the cakes need it depending on how long it takes to pin after a dunk.

hope that helps ya.  :smile::thumbup:

how does one keep cakes intact and do a double-end casing?  I know what a DEC is, but a bunch of whole cakes laid out in casing trays with DEC on them would look pretty odd.  Please clarify!  Thanks!

i had 6 jarson all. i crumbled 3 brf cakes it to 2/3 cow pooh 1/3 verm. made 3 small trys out and left  3 left overs stayed as cakes and the trays did better in growing.

it's pretty standard actually... it's what everyone did before the dunk and roll method became popular.  You can do both the dunk and roll and DEC.  Just dunk your cakes for 12 to 24 hours after you birth them, rinse them off with clean water and roll them in dry, clean verm.  Then you can use a 1/2 pint jar lid that has wet verm in the bottom... set the intact cake on top of that... then put another 1/2 inch pile of wet verm on top of the cake.  Do a search... it won't be hard to find pics of it..

You'll ultimately get more if you spawn to something like coir.

This method sounds like it would be qualified as a cake rather than a casing.  Is a casing only a casing if the substrate is spawned to something else?  I've never heard of dunk and roll applied to casings.  The method you describe seems like it would create a casing layer without the benefit of more square inches of exposed substrate, which would result in less fruit (hence the need to use a casing as opposed to just dunk and roll cakes).  Maybe I'm in need of  :whack:, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this.

I am describing a dunk and rolled cake, not a casing... The amount of surface area gained (if any at all) by crumbling a cake without spawning it to something is minimal compared to the risk/time added to the cake by doing so.  Of course you're going to do whatever you want with your project, but I'm just recommending that you keep the cakes intact.

And just quickly doing a mental inventory of an intact cakes' surface area compared to a crumbled one, I'd say that the intact cake has at least 10% more surface to fruit from.

larger flushes are obtained more from having the right amount of water with the right clone/isolate than available surface area ime anyway.

I saw a grow log that used the whole cakes, which is what fahtster was referring to.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8559212

If what we're talking about is square inches of potential fruiting area, it seems to be a better idea to dunk and roll, maximizing the fruiting area.  However, in this grow log he just cased whole cakes.  Seems like this cuts the area for potential fruiting at least in half, as only half the cake will have the potential to fruit.  The only upside I can see is the substrate can focus its energy on that one side that is exposed to light, FAE, and RH.

So the next question would be to all the wise cultivators out there (fahtster included - you've been awesome with your advice!) -
Is there a significant yield difference between dunk and roll cakes or whole cakes that have been cased?  Reasons?

I can see this hobby is much, much deeper than it appears on the surface if the possibilities of what to do with just cakes are this wide.

aha... I see what you're saying now.. I was under the impression that you were talking about breaking the cakes up and laying them out so that they can recolonize.  I believe what beengonetoolong did there is considered the "9er tek" only on a larger scale.  Burying the cakes cuts the fruiting surface back a lot, obviously..  i don't see any great benefits to it, but this is a hobby and if you're willing to give it a whirl, go ahead and do so... maybe you'll like it better than just fruiting the cakes normally.
