out of all those listed above... manifest destiny/native american extermination...entire civilizations just erased, along with hundreds of millions of animals and 95%+ of the old growth forests in the US

The Gulag in the Soviet Union.

I don't know the exact details as it was my bud who filled me in,but they were essentially forced labour camps.

People who committed the pettiest of crimes would be put in there and forced to work like building roads and railways. A lot of them never got back out. Or they'd be in there for years at a time.

Crimes such as making a remark about Stalin could have gotten you in there for twenty years or even life.

Edit: I should include that I wikied "Gulag" and I forgot that my friend read the book called "The Gulag Archipelago" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn .

He wrote from personal experience as he did a stretch in a Gulag.

He basically spent ten years imprisoned in a Gulag for referring to Stalin in a letter to his friend as "The whiskered one".

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pol Pot, hugely underrated in the genocide rankings.

So the most fucked up atrocity is something that never even happened?  That belittles real atrocities.

State-sanctioned physical torture.  Most of these were used by theocratic institutions to force heretics to recant:

Heretic fork - jammed between the chin and sternum while the offender recants his heretical remark.

Thumbscrew

The rack:

The pear - Use your imagination to figure out what they do with this.  Sometimes they heat it.

Knee splitter

Spanish donkey - They would keep adding weight until you were in two pieces.

Imagine living in a society where you or your friends and family could have any of these things actually used on them.  Paid for by your tax dollars.

I think this is more fucked up than anything else that has happened in US history.  They thought up of plans to stage terrorist attacks against innocent americans.  That is so fucked up i can't even imagine!

So a few people thinking up plans to stage attacks on innocent americans is worse than the whole government actually attacking innocent native americans?  People think up crazy shit all the time; just thinking up plans isnt an atrocity.

Don't underestimate the atrociousness of "waterboarding" and that is considered legal in some human rights hell holes like 1978 Cambodia or 2008 USA. It involves ACTUALLY DROWNING someone until they're almost dead, then bringing them to, to drown them again, over and over, for hours on end.
