Considering buying a new laptop

For under $1000.00.  I've been looking at some Dell XPS, as they are well priced and seem pretty good.

Any suggestions?

I like my Lenovo T61, but they are a little more expensive than their competitors.

Get a laptop without a mainboard-soldered power input jack.  Dell will fuck you till they've gotten your last dime.  Searching that line I've found Dell still does their old bullshit.


Look at my prior posts regarding Dell.

Unless you've had a Dell with such a power input I'd advise you to stay away- unless you want to have to pay dell 500$ for a new mainboard every 3-8 months (more like 3 if you use it as a laptop you take with you) or try to find other people that have compatible parts and hope they solder correctly, don't brick your laptop, and are able to find the parts which Dell always prohibits from being sold except to them (which is why they tell you to give them 500$ for a new motherboard when its only a $1.50 part or so that needs fixing- Dell won't let the parts be sold as they want to sell new motherboards).


I wouldn't buy from a company that does that shit to people when easy fixes abound.


If you do got with it I'd consider the costs of the extended waranty in with the laptop.


I'm bitter so consider that, but I'd proceed with caution unless you've used similar laptops and are OK with the hassle and expense of keeping it running.  (my laptop model was peculiarly fucked, but the problem exists in all dells and dell does nothing to stop it to my knowledge).



Just my two cents.  Beware the power cord.

But its understandable, Ive seen your complaint posted by others.  I know my laptop has a wire that leads from the jack to the board :smile:.

If you want a good deal get a refurbished laptop. I bought mine for 300 bucks and it serves my purposes fine. The first hard drive did fail after 3-4 days...they replaced it though.

Yeah, your setup makes sense.  That's what I'm recomending he look for.  The whole concept is stupid.  Seriously, could it cost more than $5 to add that feature?  I'd pay 20 for the option.  WTF is Dell's problem?  (I'm not even mentioning hte other problems I had as they are hopefully not relevant here)

It just seems obvious that if you solder a plug that requires mechanical manually applied force to operate onto the motherboard you're going to have issues.  It just boggles the mind they don't disclose this shit.  It is the single most important buying criteria for me when I get a new laptop.  On the plus side I collected about five or more (forget) laptop boxes with padding I sold on ebay from Dell for all the time I mailed that shit to and from them. (this is prior to my warranty running out).




Bradely, how long have you had your laptop?  You had problems with the plug before?  I saw in the other post you got  a Dell.  I would consider the extended warranty if yours is vulnerable to this crap, and it seems like it is.

If you've had it for three months your getting close to the point where Dell's evil vibes will wreck your laptop.  Be warned. (if you don't use it as a laptop but rather sit it on a desk you can probably get a year out of it by not unplugging it or moving it every)

John, I don't know what kind of plug this is. I'll make it a priority to backup my files though.

I do basically use it as a desktop. It also doesn't have a battery so I guess I shouldn't endorse it as a good "laptop" deal.

these are better computers in 2 ways
first if something in a computer is going to fail it's going to fail in the first few days (except for power plugs)
second they test the hell out of the refurbished computers
I mean extreme testing like running it in an oven over clocked for a week or so

Do you have a link that attests to the quality of refurbished computer testing?

Most of the suppliers I found only have a 3 month warranty, except for HP, which has a 1 year on some models.

If they are indeed better quality I am going to stick with refurbished.
