I like the older thinkpads, they're reliable and can be pretty inexpensive if you don't need the best hardware, but I would just put GNU/Linux or bsd on them. The best laptop depends on what you plan to use it for.

My use would be general entertainment.
In more specific: making notes a lot, doing math, leaving pics/slideshows up to continue to look back n forth at, streaming stuff from free hulu, streaming free clips of fav porn from trusted adult entertainment sites, watching DVDs, listening to music, streaming music videos online, surfing net via popular search engines, making topics and replying to topics on some good message boards, and rarely playing games/video games.

Cheap netbook and install SSD, very easy too do and will change a cheap mediocre laptop into a very usable device.

Asus or Lenovo, up to $1k, ssd. Important in a laptop imo: low weight, sufficient memory and an i5.

What games? Pretty much everything else you can do with a $200-$300 laptop, here try this one. On mine I can game fine up to most psp games, though windows probably will be slow on it not that you need it at all.

For the past 15 years my laptop has always been a used or refurb thinkpad. I rock a x220 now, its great and cheap.

I got a lenovo y410p back in September of 2013. I loved it at first... then started to notice some of the pieces were cheaply made and the casing didnt connect properly. Then my screen broke in december 2013 and I was given a refurbished one from under warranty. Then in January of 2015 the connection of the lcd cable and screen got fucked, so I replaced both. Now the laptop is just kinda a piece of shit (issues with my screen and random other issues) and im waiting for it to fail. Debating getting another laptop this summer or not... just a matter of time before this laptop is useless.
TL:DR I thought I loved lenovo, but turns out that I dont. Gonna try asus next time me thinks

When you get a lenovo, you want a thinkpad not an ideapad. Also some of the newer models have been getting bad reviews, the older thinkpads are solid.

I like macbook pro's design. Aluminum all round, back lit keyboard, good hinge and no stickers on my computer please. I like Thinkpad's versatility. Parts are easily accessible and replaceable. No security screws, notes inside explaining where to access certain parts. I also like the thinkpad trackpoint. I used to like the mac trackpad, and don't get me wrong, as far as trackpads go, the mac trackpad is awesome, but the thinkpad trackpoint is better. In saying that, the thinkpad trackpad on my laptop T430, is one of the worst ones i've used, so i disabled it. Speaking of that, that's another thing i like, i like customisation options in the bios. If a computer has Optimus, being able to disable that is important to me.
The overwhelming thing that influences me to buy a laptop however is the battery life. I need a good battery life.

I have a Thinkpad T530i that I got for pretty cheap. Mostly pretty happy with it but one corner of the case broke off and apparently many people have had the same problem. Another annoying thing is that it came with no wifi and apparently you must use whitelisted hardware or it will refuse to boot. Also, the monitor has this weird horizontal bleed thing going on.

Mac makes overpriced paperweights, I'd avoid them like the plague. If you want the bios to be customizable, you could always look into one of the libreboot thinkpads, it comes with grub instead of a typical bios! http://www.libreboot.org/
Gluglug will add the free software stack if you send them your thinkpad and you can also get get some with the stack already added from their shop. Unless you want to learn how to do it all yourself. Also, you can occasionally find them much cheaper on ebay. http://shop.gluglug.org.uk/

I personally have a Macbook Air and wouldn't use or recommend anything else. The materials and design are awesome, the software is great - you will pick OSX up in 10 minutes and wonder why you ever put up with Windows. You can buy a used one for cheap - if the battery life is fading a little from age you can replace the battery for about $70 (thats AU pricing - no doubt that will be cheaper in the US/other parts of the world).
Go on - make the jump. You know you want to

OSX is just a poorly made bsd, something which you can get for free without any restrictive license agreements.
Here is the 2-clause bsd license:

And the 3 clause license:
Quote:

1. Redistributions of source code must retain the above copyright notice, this list of conditions and the following disclaimer.

For comparison the latest osx yosemite license is a 462 page pdf book.
http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX10103.pdf
Edit: I guess upon further examination most of it is translations, its a mere 13 pages in English as far as I an see.

I would avoid dell like the plague, certainly the worst thing suggested in this thread so far next to the macbook. I used to have a Dell xps 730 desktop, everything down to the case was intentional non-compatible with anything non-dell, the mobo was utter shit and broke no matter how many times the warranty replaced it and could only boot Opensuse and Gentoo for some strange reason. The newer lenovo's do seem sketchy, but if you want a cheap laptop the older models are solid.

For the record, I generally have the same stance regarding dell as you Bryain.
However years ago I was gifted a Dell laptop... I wasn't thrilled. but like I stated earlier in this thread I eventually got my own lenovo ~2 years ago and have run into nothing but problems. So here I am typing from my almost 8 year old Dell Inspiron. It still works while my lenovo is broken to shit... So maybe Dell makes better things than people are lead to believe, I dunno. I just know I used to hate on Dell, but I can't knock that my 8 year old dell is still good enough to use today.

I've been told that the older Dell's were better made (Maybe around 2004?) than the newer ones. The same seems true for lenovo...

It was sometime around then that Lenovo first acquired IBM's personal computer business, including the Thinkpad line.
My biggest complaint with my Thinkpad is the intentional incompatibility with third-party hardware upgrades (notably wifi, the RAM and storage can be upgraded no problem). I remember hearing similar complaints about Dell in the early 2000s, that replacing a desktop motherboard or PSU with anything non-Dell would fuck shit up because of non-standard voltages or something.
