Another Laptop thread. what to buy?

Can someone point me to a website with good reviews? And a good place or site to buy from? I'm not sure if websites like pcworld have biases and such
I found an ok deal on a brand new 15" macbook pro. but it is still very expensive and i really don't think that I need such a powerful machine. I feel like I could get something that would suit my needs (home use) for half the suggested price
Something cheaper would be better. I know nothing about computers or anything... I'm would to spend 1000 or less if possible
Some art capability would be nice, for photography. Otherwise I'm not too fancy.
I keep reading mixed reviews about operating systems (vista vs XP) and stuff...
edit: Spend a lot of time on the internet. built in wireless would be nice

stick w/ xp, or wait till next year. m$ is releasing a new os (windoze 7) which will kill off both xp and vista. kind of a crappy time to buy a lappy knowing it will be obsolete by christmas.

this is true, but he doesn't sound like he needs a state of the art computer.
i would not get a macbook. you pay a lot for the brand and it sounds like you just want a capable machine.
hp's are pretty much the best technology for your money. check this out:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834147926
$549 with mail in rebate. that's about half the price of a new stock macbook, and it has twice the ram and a faster processor.

avoid acers. they have a reputation for being cheaply made.
i don't know anything about MSI.
netbooks kick serious ass though. i take mine to classes all the time. it's a lot easier than carrying around a full sized laptop, and the intel atom processor is surprisingly powerful and efficient. great for surfing the net, listening to music, etc. i wouldn't recommend it though unless you have another computer to use with a bigger screen and keyboard. you'll go insane trying to type a full paper on a netbook.

Even the HP scientific calculators are shit these days. I have an HP49g+ which is from the line which used to be the best made calculator out there. These days it's still top of the line in terms of capabilities, but shit in terms of build quality. Ever since HP sold off Agilent, the same has been true of every product they make. This laptop is a year old and it barely runs. It still has a decent level of hardware but 2 out of 3 USB ports are dead, the hard drive is on its last legs, it is constantly overheating, locks up every few days, a lot of the finish has rubbed off.... It came with 2 built-in mics and two headphone jacks... What a bunch of gimmickry bullshit. Fuck HP...

thinkpads are by far, the greatest laptops on the planet. Well made, beautiful and functional. Specifically the X series. Buy a used one, and if it is under a year old, drop $300 on ibm's depot replacement warranty, and they will hold you down, no matter what. I dropped 22oz of beer into my comp and only the speakers stopped working, and there was a warm little beer breath coming out of the vent. Lenovo replaced it in 2 days, DHL shipping at their expense.
otherwise, get an asus netbook. They are ill.

Thinkpads used to be the greatest laptop, however Lenovo is fucking the brand up imo. The screen quality is almost a joke compared to the glory of the old IBM's. The new laptops also have a poor quality keyboard. If you push certain buttons the whole keyboard flexes downwards. Overall they still might be the best, however if Sony ever makes their 13 inch model (I forget the name) in a 14 or 15 inch, then the crown shall be passed.

I recommend anyone looking at buying a laptop to chec kout ASUS. Not Acer...ASUS. I think they're the best thing going right now and I couldn't be happier with my M50VM.

Yeah, thinkpads are not nearly as amazing as they used to be, but I still like the x series over pretty much anything out there now. The resolution SUCKS for the screen size, but I will live with it until something better comes along. 1024x768 is pretty much unacceptable at this point for a 12" screen, I think.
I have had extremely poor luck with sony laptops. They always come with a ton and a half of sony software that is buggy and hard to get rid of. But maybe that is just me.

I just bought a ThinkPad T500.
No complaints.
Thinkpads are still the best laptops even if Lenovo has dragged down the Thinkpad quality a tad.
For heavy heavy gaming I would go for something else though. They have only average to slightly above average video cards. If your into gaming I would go for a cheaper laptop that just focused on having a well above average video card.
Memory and Hard Drives can always be upgraded in a laptop. Things like CPU and Video card cant. So those might be things you should get the best for your money on and then upgrade the rest later as needed.
Good luck.

With HP, a lot depends upon the series. The consumer line is crap. The business line isn't bad, but isn't great. Their tech support sucks.
Lenovo gets good marks on tech support. Hardware is so/so.
Apple gets good marks on tech support and good marks on hardware, but bad marks on price. It is very expensive for what you get.
I avoid Acer, Toshiba and Sony because they are so difficult to get serviced, at least in the Caribbean. Got a problem, send it away rather than taking it to a local service provider.

Heavy duty gaming, or heavy duty anything, on a laptop, is stupid. They are built to be small, light, and portable, not to be high performance computational beasts. If you want high performance, for the money, you can get a much better performing desktop. With a laptop, you are paying for portability and sacrificing performance.

Good hardware, an OS that doesn't slow down over years of use, fuck that anti virus stuff, plus when you want to upgrade you can get alot of your initial investment back when you sell it. Macs seem to hold their value good even when being sold used. (the first mac i had was an old ibook and it ran awesome)

i love when apple enthusiasts say that it's impossible to get a virus on their macs. the only reason that was ever true was because macs weren't very popular, so hackers focused on the huge pc crowd. it's not some magical operating system that's immune to viruses and malware. OSX is just as exploitable as windows these days.
if you want a secure OS, linux is the only sure shot. and again, it's because not many hackers have bothered to create exploits when the userbase and available versions are so limited.
macs are nice computers. i really love the aluminum cases and the high quality screens. just saying.

> OSX is just as exploitable as windows these days.
I agree, it is not impossible for macs to get a virus. However, OS-X is based upon Unix which is designed to be multiuser from the ground up. Windows is based upon DOS which is designed to be singleuser from the ground up. The windows paradigm, because they continued to hold onto backwards compatibility, is broken. This is the primary reason why Windows has such a difficult time with virus'. It has gotten better with Vista and the changes they have made to the registry, but they still have problems. Claiming that the only reason Macs don't get viruses and Windows does is because of the size of the user base is erroneous. Windows is flawed and nothing Microsoft does, without dropping backwards compatibility, will fix it.

This is true, but for some people (like me) who travel frequently and are hardcore gamers.. it can be much more convenient to have a high-powered gaming laptop. True, you sacrifice a lot of power and performance for the portability, but a compromise can be made. My laptop is big (17") and heavy as hell compared to many (~17 lbs) and the battery life is shit... but it runs most of the newer high end games very well. True, for what I spent on this thing.. I could have built a BEAST of a desktop with probably twice the raw processing power and peformance... but I needed a laptop for gaming on the go! Still not gonna stop me from building a beast desktop too though, for ultimate gaming at home.
I'm thinking something on the order of 16GB of RAM and the latest and greatest processor and video cards whenever I get around to doing it. It will make me feel better for using an 'M' video card for the past year. I have dual 8800M GTs in SLi, but I bet a single 8800 GTX would outperform them

I would build a small mATX based machine with the same portability as a laptop, but with many times the power. Display, keyboard, and mouse would be the only issues regarding portability. Something like the DFI LanParty X58-T3H6 Jr, with an i920 CPU in a tiny chassis such as the SilverStone SG02 or Lian-Li v351. I don't know about the SG02, but the v351 has enough room for a Noctua U9B heatsink with push/pull fans. Add a decent modular power supply and a couple of high end graphics cards and you have some serious gaming power in a shoebox sized computer.

I'm a big fan of the Gateway P series. Affordable and perform great. If your looking on the cheap the Dell Vostro series is great. Ugly as hell, but you can configure them to run comparable systems that cost twice as much.

Any Asus, most categories from gaming to business to entertainment they have top notch notebooks in those categories. Asus G1 2 years and still running like new, also running Windows 7 and it feels completely different in a bamf way.

Recommend XP. Stick to a brand that has excellent warranty. Check first for a local repair shop in your town that will take care of you. If say hp or toshiba just cause of the great warranty coverage. Next thing scope out the specs of the laptop you want. Don't buy future shop or best buy or some other store moving shit product. Good luck. Didn't read the whole thread.

www.ibuypower.com also makes great laptops - but only PC though. If you do decide to go PC, just don't buy a namebrand lap top - they cost more and come pre-loaded with spyware and other crap you don't want
