Ah, that's good to know. I haven't had any stats classes though. I'll probably have to take a course in stats at a community college or something before I do the GRE. My goal for now is finish undergrad and worry about the GRE later, this undergrad is costing way too much.

You dont need a stats class dude.  Of course you dont care now, but of course take a pretest first and youll see that the questions are conceptual and of a particular type that no class can prepare you for.

ha, I have taken a shit load of math classes.  Not because Im a math major, but because I had to start at elementary algebra.  I have since taken 14 math classes in college!  No more though, its kind of wierd...

Im surprised your school has calc 4.  Ive never heard of a sequence that goes past 3.  What are you majoring in?  EE?

I loved calc 4 the best, and I actually use that shit alot, namely Laplace and Fourier transforms.  Also see alot of PDEs and the multi-dimensional shit was/is helpful in electromagnetics & antennas.  I'm an EE major btw.

That's what I wanted to avoid. That's why I studied the hell out of so many cliffnotes to learn algebra over a summer. In retrospect it would have been better to have a teacher. But then again, I didn't learn a single thing from my trig teacher. He was a terrible teacher. Everything I got out of that class, I learned from shoving my face in my book and staring at the stuff until I could get it.

Anyway, I am sure after fourteen classes, you have it down way better than me.

TO be honest, I made my best grades and felt the smartest/wisest/knowledgeable back when I smoked alot of weed.  I also invsested more time in learning and staying physically fit.  Total antithesis of the Drug War's stereotypical pothead. Carry on. :goodmorning:

anyone here know how to calculate a statistical beta? my professor and i were talking about this in stats today since we usually just use a computer to do it, and he was like, "if you learn how to calculate beta from top to bottom while still in undergrad, you are a god among men." . none of the grad students in our class could even do it.

The smartest people I know are fans of drugs. My boss is a world renowned neuroscientist and he takes us out to the bar for special occasions (birthdays, promotions) and buys us drinks and tells stories of his college days when he used to take acid and drive around the deserts of Colorado.

Another one of my good friends (who I met on the shroomery, actually) is one of the smartest people I know. He's almost done with his second year of med school (at a top school) and is going to become a neurosurgeon. He has done more drugs than I can count.

Myself? I'm probably going to get my PhD in Marine Biology and/or Aquatic Biology. If I don't do that, I'm going to get a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

In short: fuck the "drug users end up as losers" stereotype. All of the smartest people I've ever met did drugs at some point in their lives. A lot of them STILL do them

Ditto, fun shit (except we didn't call it calc 4, that stuff was split over a couple different classes)

I felt that way for a long, long time about math. For whatever reason I convinced myself it just wasn't for me. Over time, my life moved me to a place where I began to feel like I can do whatever I put my mind to (the gospel of George McFly).

So I decided to buck up and learn math so that I could be marketable, and build a better life for my family and I. It just takes work. I am pretty sure I am working harder than most others to get it, but it feels great when the concepts start coming together. Majors that don't have a math component tend not to be worth the diploma paper they are written on.

integration, differentiation, kick ass.

calculus is good because it is at the base of Newtonian physics, and can be applied to almost every other strain of maths, and in general to understanding changes over time

Calc isn't hard at all.  It's just poorly taught.

I've taken Calc 1-4, and quite a few more advanced math courses and have done some independent research on number theory and I've taught the basics of Calc 1-3 and for fun some stuff on the cardinality of infinite sets to a ten year old girl and it sunk in.

The derivative is the slope of the curve at all points.  Take a step back.  Pick two points on the curve.  Draw a line that intersects both points.  The line has the approximate slope or derivative of the curve for those points.  Now shrink the spacing in your head towards zero and visualize the line's slope becoming more precise.  That is the exact derivative at the specific point.  You don't even have to think about the derivative for all points in the real world.  You merely use this approximation for a sufficiently small distance between the points and your computer gives you the derivative there.  That is a numerical method for obtaining the derivative.

Integrals are even easier and more fun to explain to children.  Take your curve and fill it with rectangles of the same width.  There you have an approximation of your integral.  As the rectangles become skinnier you have a more and more accurate integral.  The exact integral represents an infinite number of lines of zero width rectangles adjacent to each other, but in the real world your numerical method uses fairly narrow rectangles until you get a useful enough answer.  As a bonus, take the extra space, the error, and think of useful shapes to fill it with.  For example, triangles.  Using rotation, keep filling the empty space with smaller and smaller triangles or other shapes.  You get something resembling a fractal.  Zoom in on the area in your head and you can visualize some very interesting repeating patterns.  That is a computer graphics numerical method.

For Calc 3, you're looking at objects in 3D.  For the derivative, consider a slice of the object, like a circle out of a ball and apply the same logic from Calc 1.  For the 3D integral use blocks instead of rectangles, place them together and add their volumes.  For the surface integral think of a surface that's really easy to measure the area for.  Let's say you have ball.  Approximate it with a square box.  A numerical method for the surface integral might be hexagons or something like that.  As the size of the surface shapes approaches a point, you have your exact surface intergral.

Have fun!
