are you fucking serious?
if you are trying to fill the pool why would you even open the drain pipe?
tell the teacher the question is retarded.
tell the teacher you will answer the questions as to how long it will take with the pool 2/3rds full if you only open the inlet pipe. (i am bad at maths but would assume 10 hours?)
This could actually apply to real life except for the fact that no one in their fucking right mind who are trying to fill a pool would open the drain pipe for any reason whatsoever.
Are you fucking with us? this can't seriously be a question!!!!

so water is flowing out 2/3 of how much water is flowing in so essentialy when both outlets are open its like having only 1/3 of the water coming in with nothing coming out so if it takes 10 hours to fill a third of the tank it would take 3 times longer to fill it which wut they already said was 30

it's to get you to think critically, not to be practical.
the testmaker probably couldn't think of a good real-life example to relay the concepts that they are trying to test over/teach..
if you want to be practical, go to technical school.

How many engineers does it take to do a single algebra problem?

Im going to do this next one also but im also going to post it so I can compare to what other people get to make sure I get this last one right.
One numvber is 2/3 of a number. The sum of the 2 numbers is 35. find the 2 numbers.
Looking at it it doesn't seem to hard.
that doesn't even require math..
21 + 14 = 35
14 is 2/3 of 21..

Well, it might be elementary, but it's still math . Ferris- That's a good question. Let's see, if x=the number of engineers, and y=total beer intake...

Suck a dick. This question is not practical and if the testmaker cant think of a real life example that is BETTER THAN THIS FUCKING NONSENSE then he should not be writing said test.
I think critically, therefore I think the question is complete nonsense, I overlooked the simple math to show that this is a ridiculous question.
I have never seen such an illogical question on any math test. There has to be about a billion different things that could be used that make more sense than this.
Thats what happens when uneducated people write questions for education.
The same people who thinks all slaves in america where black.
The same that think "aids" is caused by a magical virus called HIV.
The same that think that Christopher Columbus, and Italian man called the people he encountered "Indians" because he though he was in India, despite that in 1492 that India was called Hindustan, and that he would not call them anything based on the english version of said country regardless, and that for some illogical reason, the name stuck for 600+ years. (he called them Indios/Indians because "In Dios" means "in god" in Italian/Spanish (he was funded by the Spanish)
With your mindset, no wonder the facts get skewed.

Maybe you have to drain the pool in order to clean it.
Also, I've seen much, much less logical math problems.

True, but if that where the case, why would you continue to pump more water into it at the same time?
I have seen plenty of questions that would never really come up in real life, but nothing that is just stupid like this.
If the water in your bathtub was filthy, you would drain it all and THEN start to fill it. you wouldn't do both.

Ur doesn't have a brain, Ur was an ancient city in Southern Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq), located near the mouth (at the time) of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers on the Persian Gulf and close to Eridu.

dude, you are an asshole.
sounds like you just wanted to rant on someone.
i agree with what you said except for the 'suck a dick' and the 'with your mindset' part.
i clearly wrote that they are trying to teach concepts, not information, that's why they didn't use a good real-life example.
you can't honestly say you've never seen a bad real-life example?
have you ever taken any statistics class? how about any physics class?
give me some great examples from their test questions that can be applied practically and i'll give you five shrooms..
at least stop being a fucking dickhead.
or.. propose a better question that would test the same concept. if you can i'll give you five shrooms.. that's all the incentive that i got over the internet.

"I have never seen such an illogical question on any math test."
Well then, you haven't taken enough math tests ! After awhile you get numb to the ridiculous nature of the word problems and just start hunting for the numbers and relationships. Filling/emptying problems are critical to teach such high level math as differential calculus, for example. And yeah, some people actually use this math...granted only 1% or so of the population. I haven't had to use it for awhile...

Yes, but I don't consider statistics totally useless. I mean, I could watch sitcoms instead . How is this for a possible "real life" version:
The torrential downpour will cause your basement to fill up (toppling your FC's) in 30 hours. The sump in the corner can be used to empty the basement in 45 hours. If the basement is 2/3 filled, the rain is unabating, and the sump pump is humming, how long will it take for your mushrooms to drown?
