And this is still the very beginning. We haven't even begun with derivatives yet. This one is number twelve, and there are still several more to go. It is mostly algebra, but I'm still struggling.

I'll get through, but I am sure there will be a few wrecked appliances here and there around the house before I am done.

edit: I'm a retard and no one called me out on it .

f(x) = 1/x^2
f'(x) = -2/x^3

The integral of 1/x is ln(x) +c :foreheadslap:.

If my internet suddenly wasn't being slow as shit I would look at your work... but for some reason the picture won't load.  Its been going for a few minutes now, and I have a cable line.  I'm even having trouble surfing around wiki.

Anyway... calc isn't bad dude.  Just keep up with it.  That does look like a lot of work for a Calc 1 problem, though.  Whats your major?
I'm taking complex variables, proofs, and operations research II right now...  All 3 of those sucks huge balls in comparison to calc 1.

By the way... if you hate calc, don't even go past calc 2.  Once you get to multivariable calc, linear algebra and differential equations, its all just downhill.

That is encouraging. This teacher wants to see every single step along the way...hence all the work. I'm only going through Calc II. I already have a degree in music (presently earning my fare as a musician) but am switching careers to teach high school math. I only have to go through Calc II for that. I still have to do most of the rest of a math major to teach it though.

So it is nice to know there is a downhill stage before it is all done. It is starting to come together for me...slow but sure. I am in my late thirties, and never went beyond geometry in high school. So I learned algebra from cliffnote books last summer, took a trig class in the fall, and now am in calculus. It is just pushing my brain, that is all.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I just realized I said "whats your major major?"... I'm a tool.

Maybe its just the early part of calc thats a pain in the ass.  Once you get to derivatives and integrals and learn the shortcuts for them, its easy peezy.  Just practice, practice, practice.

I miss calculus 1 and 2 so much sometimes it makes me want to... I don't know... retake it.

Well, I'm glad I posted. Somehow it is encouraging to see several people amped about calculus. I definitely relate to the practice, practice, practice part as a musician.

What is your major? What are you doing with all that Math? It sounds interesting.

I didn't enjoy Calc 2. Studying infinite series and stuff was OK, but I didn't enjoy testing for divergence and other non-sense  :downswords:

Math.  Trust me... its not really that interesting.  I just picked it so I could be guaranteed good money after I get a degree or three.

Wise choice. I wish I had done it sooner. As an educator, I can basically choose exactly where I want to teach. It is not the greatest money as a teacher, but I love teaching and teenagers, plus it has a great pension and I can retire early. The life of a musician was nice for a while, but it becomes a real burden and I felt trapped in it.

Good luck to you bro.

Good luck to you too man... I can see a musician-turned-math teacher as someone who high schoolers could identify with a tad more than the average stuffy older school teacher.
I went to catholic school, and could never relate to any of my teachers there, except for the balding, gray haired, overweight  art teacher, who obviously used to be a pothead back in the day...  he was chill.

But good luck in teaching dude!
And, good job teaching yourself algebra.  Most people don't have the discipline to sit down and actually teach themselves math.

Oh man, I took that shit 2 years ago and got a B in the class. Now I don't even remember how to do limits. Studying for the GRE is gonna suuucck.

BTW: there are tons of people on the Shroomery who are pretty much math geniuses. Isaacein first comes to mind. Coaster also knows math like the back of his hand, but he got banned from the Shroomery a while ago. He's still over at the Growery I think. He has AIM if he's not there.

Made 80 bucks for like 3hours... not half bad I say

Shoot a PM if you ever have some issues, the offer is there :goodluck:

PS

I'm still in HS tho, so it may not be the same shit, the test tomorrow is on derivatives though, so maybe I am??

If its the general GRE you are thinking about, dont worry about limits and calculus.

The general GRE deals with high school level math mostly, just at an advacned level.  Algebra, geometry, statistics and the like.

Ah, that's good to know. I haven't had any stats classes though. I'll probably have to take a course in stats at a community college or something before I do the GRE. My goal for now is finish undergrad and worry about the GRE later, this undergrad is costing way too much.
