Need help with Flash

Is anyone here experienced with flash? I'm very new to it and have a couple questions about retrieving information from a database outside of the flash movie.

Basically what I want to do is have a database of information in list form. For example:

ItemX, a, 1, @
ItemY, b, 2, #
ItemZ, c, 3, $

Where ItemX is the name to be selected from a list in the flash and the rest of the information is the databased part. When you select the name from a list, it will pull the information out of the database to be used as a few variables. So if I had a list:

ItemX
ItemY
ItemZ

And selected "ItemY' from the list and then submit, it will pull the information b, 2, # and add it to three separate variables according to their order. Like, height=b width=2 length=#.

It would then go to the next screen which would deal with a new database. This one would have other names, but one variable as well. So like:

PieceX, c
PieceY, b
PieceZ, a

On this frame it would have another list to be generated only of the names which match the variable. So if I selected ItemX from the first frame, in this frame it would only display PieceZ, because they share the same variable 'a'.

I think I can figure out how to display the different variables, I just need to know how to get that information from the list.

There's no direct way to connect from flash to a DB as far as I know.

you'd have to go through php or cold fusion or something
stuff like zendamf, amfphp, flash remoting (adobe's solution, costs $) and others.

AMF = Actionscript message format
amfphp would be what I'd use to go from a flash file to a database.  I don't know of any direct facility inside flash to do as much as of the current version.

You don't necessarily have to go through php or coldfusion. You can keep all the variables in a text file, and get Flash to request the file and pull the variables out of that. But a text file isn't a very good database, and if it's a large file Flash will have to download the whole thing.

But it's simpler than using php.
