Wouldn't it be possible to just make this USB Flash Drive for stealth surfing yourself?

Haven't they just simply preloaded this software on it? Would there be any hurdles to doing this yourself?

www.portableapps.com would be a free alternative.
Portable, self-contained word processing, instant messaging, IRC, e-mail, ftp and web browsing - and they've got more stuff coming.
Torpark is also pretty cool. It's a modified version of portable firefox that automatically uses The Onion Router to keep your browsing anonymous, and also clears all saved data when you kill the program, even though it would only be stored on the USB key it was running from.

knoppix can do all this and more. You'll have to reboot the machine to use it though... and you run the risk of being labeled a dirty linux hippie, but you will be guaranteed 100% spyware and adware free.

That's true, but it's easier to plug in a USB drive and run apps from it than to boot to a cd at a public terminal - especially if you have to change CMOS settings to get it to boot from cd.
I'd get some funny looks at my local library if I was fucking about with BIOS settings

public terminals aren't safe period.
If there is a keylogger on the terminal no amount of software will keep you safe, but yes putting your own firefox and thunderbird etc. installation on a USB drive will give you the same protection as their solution will for a fraction of the price.
($89 for a 128MB USB stick with some freeware on it? that's a rip-off. )

Do you know if you can use Featherlinux, for linux based programs, such as Airsnort... or any type of wardriving software.
