Air Exchange During Incubation

After innoculation, I have heard all kinds of opinions about putting tape on or just leaving the holes alone... but the main reason behind all this is because people want to keep contams out but you also need to allow for air exchange. This is why many shroom shops sell filter discs. My ? is: to allow air exchange AND to keep contams out, could you just use some kind of makeshift filter disc... like a coffee filter on top of the jar held in place with a rubber band???

The raccoon has used internal filter disks & double coffee filters over the outside of the lid & jar -- held down with thick rubber band -- since his day 1. Works like a charm. You can PC then like that. Coffee filter will dry instantly, if PC is opened while still hot.
I would suppose, if you did it w/o any internal filter disk in place. You could innoc through those external coffee filters, then cover with 2 more you had swabbed with alcohol.
Tyvck is not hard to find. USPS -- FedEx envelopes are that.

Then, isn't there a chance that some of the alcohol on the coffee filter could drip into the holes???

The alcohol would evaporate quickly. That's one of the 'properties' of alcohol. I'm trying coffee filters and polyfil- post innoculation. I took off the tape and put on a layer of poly, and the coffee filter. Try www.tyvek.com This looks promising. DIY filter disks.

Yup, alcohol evaporates about as fast as you swab it on. None would touch the content.
But, I don't understand why everybody does not use tyvck internal filters.
Duhhhhhh..........Free tyvck envelopes at any major US post offfice.
It is not tough to find a post office. Nothing is better than FREE. If it works & Tyvck does.
Anno approves it's use & he is almost a shroom cult GOD.
