Air exchange during incubation
    #2175574 - 12/13/03 11:16 PM (13 years, 15 hours ago)

I need some advice when it comes to air exchange during incubation. How important is it? do jars require fresh air on a regular basis for efficient mycelium growth?

For example, should I take the tape off of the innoculation site holes? or even fan out the incubator sometimes? It would seem to me that doin such would increase the risk of contams.

Another question about air exchange. When creating an automated system, what types of material are used as filters at intake and exhaust sites on terrariums and/or incubation chambers.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Its not important during incubation. I personally like to check up on things every day, so I will fan it out once per day, then spray lysol inside.

Once you've reached your fruiting chamber stage, filtration should be used, however its not very important due to the fact that the cake or casing has already been 100% colonized, and shouldn't get contaminated.

Polyester filter floss (Polyfill) is a synthetic fiber which is most commonly used. Its very effective. You can buy big bags of it from fabric stores. Its sold as pillow stuffing.

Try removing the tape from the inoculation sites. If you have a dry verm layer on the top of your jars especially, as there will be little chance that any contams will creep in. With the holes taped, jars may colonize too slowly and end up rotting before they're done colonizing. A little air is good, but there is no need to go out of your way to exchange air during incubation.
