Fresh air during incubation
    #531455 - 01/25/02 09:49 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

Hi
I am currently setting up my environments.

I will be using "Micron Magick Filter Discs" on my 1/2 pint jars. The point to these is air exchange is filtered down to 0.3 microns as well as inoculation is supposed to be more sterile so they say. I will be using a cool mist humidifier that will run 24/7 for humidity as well as air exchange.

Question is:
A chart I have shows fresh air exchange during incubation at 0 times per hour. The point to the disks is air exchange. Is it that air exchange isn?t needed? Will it hurt to have air exchange? Is air exchange beneficial?

Thanks
Six

hi...sixpac,

You don't need a cool mist humidifier for your colonizing chamber.

No you don't really need any air exchange in your colonizing chamber.
You will need to have the temps at 84 to 86 degrees though.
So you might want to worry about making a colonizing chamber before worrying about your fruiting chamber.

You will use the cool mist humidifier for your fruiting chamber.

Do you need help making and setting up a colonization chamber ?

Thanx for the reply Road.

I am using a chart that calls out temps/humidity/air exchange rates.

"Spawn run: Temp 84-86'F, humidity 90%+, 0 per hour air exchange".

I assume (assumption is the mother of all fuckups) "spawn run" means incubation.
After the cakes are birthed they will need: Temp 74-78'F, humidity 92-96% (uncased), air exchange 1-3 times per hour.
So it seems they need humidity during incubation and with the filter disks being used for air exchange that seems to make sense.

So far as chambers go I am still in the experimental/licking my thumb stage. I bought a 10 gal aquarium and stuck a lizard heater strip to the outside bottom that is supposed to raise temps 10 or so degrees above room temp. The room temp is 70 degrees with 70% humidity. After a few hours it seems to have leveled off at 78 degrees. I have a piece of ceiling tile covering the top. I plan on using a cool mist humidifier (a tek found on this site under "grow/find"/"humidification techniques") with 2 hoses coming from it, one for each chamber as both incubation and fruitation seem to need about the same humidity. Once I hook up the humidifier I will have a better idea where temps will be with humidity and can adjust heat sources to get the specs called out on the chart.

I am basically trying to set up minimal maintenance chambers.

One up coming question I will have is in my fruiting chamber can I set the cakes on something and not use Perlite due to the constant high humidity and air exchange? I don?t want a mess in the bottom of the aquarium.

Guess I've babbled enough. Thanx again Road.

Yeah the spawn run is incubation.
You need to have your jars at 84 to 86 degrees.

After the cakes are birthed you should initiate pinning.
73 degrees is optimal......with 100% humidity.

After the pins are setting....drop the humidity to 92-96%

The chamber you have set up sounds great.....make that your fruiting chamber.
The cool mist will do a great job for that.

Make a incubation chamber.....go buy a Rubbermaid container.
Get an Aquarium submersible heater....50 watt one will do the trick.
Then get a smaller container to fit inside the larger container to put your jars in.
Stick the submersible heater inside the big container and fill it to about 4" with water.
This set up works great....you will dig it.....i have 2.
1.) Picture of one of my incubators.

(This image was not re-uploaded...lol)(Copied and pasted)

I have a layer of perilite in my fruiting chamber.....I put cakes right on that.

I'm getting into casing now....so i am putting together a shelf unit.
I got a new cool mist for this project.
You might consider making a shelf unit.....These are very low maintenance.
If you would like to see some let me know and i will give you the url.
I'm making my shelf unit set up for fruiting this weekend....lolz
