Enoki/take? flammulina question
    #9727756 -

I was just wondering what differences if any there might be between flammulina velutipes and flammulina populicola (enoki and enokitake)  thanks guys   :mushroom2:

I found this.  I think one's cultivated and one's wild.  I got some Flammulina populicola from FP.  It's just starting to pin.

If you're after a distinction when it comes to its uses within cooking, there are none.  As far as the pursuit of mycology goes, they can be distinguished as separate species, but it only matters if you plan on developing breeding programs or have a OCD in your mycological affairs.

Flammulina populicola and Flammulina velutipes are closely related species. Both are commonly named Enokitake, Enoki for short. I personally doubt that F. populicola is a separate species, since I have seen it being successfully bred with a commercial F. velutipes strain, and siblings produced viable spores.

Denger, the ME website states :

"Flammulina populicola will not "mate" with Flammulina velutipes in culture"

and

"Flammulina populicola and Flammulina velutipes have different DNA signatures"

If you have proof of the mating of those two DNA-tested cultures, you should alert ME to the error on their site.

It was not my experiment, so I personally do not have any proof, only a belief in trustworthiness of my source.

Flammulina has two usual "hard" mating factor genes, but there is definitely much more going on then that, see Genetics and Breeding of Edible Mushrooms Flammulina chapter.

It is very easy to conclude that two Flammulinas do not breed, when in fact they can.

populicola will fruit at higher temps from what I understand. Am I mistaken? We sell alot of enoki and they are all velutipes. However I was worried that we would have a harder time fruiting them in the heat of the summer so I was going to start growing populicola instead.

For the moment, I'll have to take your word for it when it comes to the information about mating.  I can't just throw $100+ at that book atm.  I still have to pick up a copy of Ainsworth's 9th (also at a large price tag) make some other purchases for this year's hobbies.
