Slow growth suffocating??
    #961710 - 10/14/02 11:56 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Hey I need to ask a question I inocculated 10 jars 3 weeks ago and kept 9, 1 got cotamed. they where malabar and eq. the prob is 1 jar is 70% colonized. 2 50% 1 30% and the rest maybe 5-10% why is it taking so long they are incubated in total dark at 84.5 degrees constantly are they suffocating the jars are sealed but my biggest worrie is why would some be so done and some so little i know spore dispersion can be a factor but i know i did it fairly equaly and don';t think it would cause this much trouble. there dosent seem to be 1 strain doing better than the other either.
please help.

You innoc'ed jars of what? Gumbo?, LOL..........

Cake mix, seed, wheat, grain?

IMHO, Any grain or seed jars need a little air exchange w/filter disc or poly fill.

If grain or seed? Did yolu ever shake them?

Sorry, the raccoon is not a whiz at cake mix's, having only done 4 pint jars, once. After that he went straight to grain spawn & bulk substrates & never went back.

Maybe, one of the cake pro's can offer a suggestion...........?

Did you follow the ratios outlined in the mix list EXACTLY? if it's too wet, which i made mine my first try, it won't colonize at ALL. They're not suffocating, there are a couple factors that might cause them not to colonize:

A) You innoculated too soon after sterilization and toasted the spores.
B) You didn't get a viable number of spores into the cake because the section of syringe you injected didn't contain any spores or the spores it did contain weren't viable.
C) The syringe you're using is too old or was stored improperly (possibly during shipping?).

Check for contams... my experience is that if they haven't shown mycellium after that long a time, contams usually set in... especially with overly wet cakes. Better too dry than too wet... you can always dunk them after birthing and the more porous the mix the faster it will colonize since it's not so dense that the mycellium can't get a hold.

!. Spray your incubator with lyso
2.wipe top off with a dampened cloth with h2o2,(perox.)
3. Remove tape from jars
4.place jars in ziplock baggies for 3-5 days, place upside down
5.spray incubator with lysol again
5. remove baggies at 50% (yes it seems low for contams but ive never had a problem)
6. birth cakes when nice and rhizzy

Its alright to birth when 50% colonized, but you'll have to remove the uncolonized part.

I know that they can be birthed at 50%. now when the whole outside is covered that is 100% right?? but how far should the myc have grown throw the substrait all the way? a centimeter? I ask because it wint cover the bottem for some reason I cant figure out. and
Mike what I was asking before is just take the tape off holes and put the jars in the bags or take the cake out and put in a bag to finish colonizeing? One more question if I birth befor 100% can I still dunk? I am just wondering it has been almost a month in perfect conditions and still not at 100%.
thanks guys

sometimes it can take up to a month to fully colonize.....if your cakes look alright, i would let them be for another week or so.

What SWIM does is inverts the jars when they are getting close to full colonization. As far as the holes in the lid, SWIM leaves the tape off after innoculating. He has found that with the dry verm layer on top, no tape is needed (at least for him) allowing for some gas exchange. Inverting near the end helps disperse CO2 restoring growth vitality.
