T.V. conversion: Whats the deal?

Call me suspicious, but what the hell is the deal with the transition of analog t.v. to digital? Why is our government, the same government who doesnt do SHIT for its people, offering $40 coupons off of the digital boxes?
They really want everyone to switch, but why, how can they possibly gain from this.
Is this a move by homeland security, an example of their deepening surveillance of american citizens? Will there be little cameras in this new hardware that can be activated from afar?  :tinfoil:

I dont think theres anything sketchy bout the switch.
I used to get told at places like best buy n such, that this was going to happen back in 02 ish..
(actually this was supposed to take place in 07, but its been pushed back.)

I dont think they'll need to activate cameras from afar, due to, they can already to that with your cell phone, even if its off.

not to head off topic too much, but to me, cell's are the sketchiest pieces of technology out today.

Why the 3G network? I know its fast, but we know what happens when the network is rebuilt in someway. Same how the gov't wants to "rebuild" the internet.

anyhow, back to topic, you can also just buy a tv with a digi tuner inside, no need for the box then. somethin to think about, if your that paranoid.

This seems close to the truth to me.

OP, you don't have to delve into government-spy-technology conspiracy theories to find justification.

It's like the FDA and pharmaceutical companies, man. Everyone's in bed.

It benefits the government because it forces everyone to buy modern TVs and digital cable boxes, which supports the capitalistic machine, which keeps us at the bottom, which keeps them at the top.

I think the switch is required because the United States is the greatest nation that has ever been on God's green earth. The United States government wants to raise the standard of living, by having everyone have GOOD television. Analog is so Mexico.

the government is mandating a switch from analog to digital so it can keep the airwaves open.  now the police, fire department, etc. will be able to utilize more frequencies because the tv waves won't be clogging them up. this has nothing to do with "good tv."

That would be good because police, firefighters, paramedics, and etc, will be more efficient and respond to stuff quicker. Its killing 2 birds with one stone! Not only are we improving America's television, we are improving our emergency services! America rules.

Wait, this is a conspiracy now?

Digital television is better, but it's costing companies tons of money to put out both analog and digital signals.

Since the government is mandating that they put out this digital signal, it makes sense that the government should help people upgrade their televisions that worked perfectly fine before, but won't work any longer after the government mandated switch.

Now, you can argue that it is no responsibility of the government to provide television service, but really they aren't.  They are merely making sure one of their programs doesn't result in the mass-incapacitation of a good percentage of the televisions in the country.

There's nothing nefarious about it.

As someone mentioned earlier, a digital conversion frees up airwaves for other services.  The coupons are an attempt to quiet everyone who is complaining.

Really though, I'd like to see the numbers on this.  How many people still use rabbit ears for TV?
