OP here,
Perhaps i should address some ambiguities in my first post.

I think the word that many people found discomforting was "distracted." But what exactly should we be distracting ourselves from? I didn't go into that. I think everyone engages in some form of escapism. We're not trying to escape reality though, that's impossible.
You may not share this belief, but I think that when the mind is not focused on some concrete goal - survival, comfort, mastery, etc - then we tend towards unhappiness.

I think that in the modern world, we have so much more free time than our ancestors (even just a few generations ago) were used to. Happiness, to me, is derived from actions that we find meaningful in some way. Whether through maintaining and strengthening social relations, or competing against others in some game, or just enjoying the sensory inputs we receive.

Some of you mentioned attention as being an important part of happiness. Maybe there are aspects in our lives that cause negative emotions but that we are powerless to change or affect. In this case, wouldn't it be better to turn our attention towards other things?

And yes WhiskyClone I've generally been pretty sad recently, but I don't mind - I see happiness as a process (maybe a cyclical one) and not a goal. I find that when I'm in a bad mood I tend to ruminate, whereas if I feel elated, I'm focused on the experience. I guess in my mind I correlated unhappiness with brooding.

In making this thread I just wanted to see what people had to say about the things that have been on my mind lately. I think its great to make statements that you yourself aren't sure of and see how people respond. Thanks for everyone's responses.

I used to think the same way, seeking fulfillment within actions & the fruit of said actions.

Until i realized all actions are meaningless, the only meaning they have is the meaning you give them, what is meaningful to you means nothing to another, therefore it only has mental meaning for the beholder, so its personal, which is distorted, not true.

No action ever has had any meaning behind it as meaning is a mental concept of self convincing, it keeps the chase fresh. Keeps the feeling that your getting somewhere...

Happyness comes when the chase stops, as when we find something new to chase we suffer until we catch it. When we are fulfilled we are happy, not when we are chasing, we think that the object satisfys us, its actually the unification of object & subject as one. Being one already the chase can only be said to be dream. Stopping chasing is where true happyness lies, in waking up.

When you by yourself are 100% happy, with nothing added to yourself to achieve that happyness, then who can take it away from you? That happyness is true happyness

Happyness from you + something else is attachment & will inevitably result in misery as you will lose anything that is apart from yourself, anything gained new will leave you so is actually equal to suffering not happyness.

This is not as nihilstic as it seems, its realistic which is liberating.

Yes, turn the attention away from everything else & towards the Self, if happyness is what your after

"whatever be the means adopted, you must at last return to the Self, so why not abide as the Self here and now?
if it is not permanent then it is not worth striving after"

You seem interested in the philosophy of happyness, which to me is the only thing we all are seeking, so i hope you really take this to heart

Meaning even is outside of our heads of course. That's liberating and makes me happy

it doesn't pay to spend your time ruminating and introspecting. life is much easier when you are constantly engaged in work and leisure. alternatively you can distract yourself with any number of things. the two options share quite a bit of overlap though.

I suppose this is true. This has never been philosophical advice to ease the mind but more so just advice your relative would give you. Keeping your mind off something is harder than it sounds but it definitely helps, and doing things to occupy your mind are just that.

I think you may be on to something, but I think you have expressed this more clearly, and more tactfully too. It reminds me of an idea I read a little while back; something I really enjoyed and found useful:

Quote:
The Bodhisattva's way is called "the single-minded way,"
or "one railway track thousands of miles long." The railway
track is always the same. If it were to become wider or
narrower, it would be disastrous. Wherever you go, the
railway track is always the same. That is the Bodhisattva's
way. So even if the sun were to rise from the west, the
Bodhisattva has only one way. His way is in each moment
to express his nature and his sincerity.
We say railway track, but actually there is no such thing.
Sincerity itself is the railway track. The sights we see from
the train will change, but we are always running on the
same track. And there is no beginning or end to the track:
beginningless and endless track. There is no starting point
nor goal, nothing to attain. Just to run on the track is our
way. This is the nature of our Zen practice.
But when you become curious about the railway track,
danger is there. You should not see the railway track. If you
look at the track you will become dizzy. Just appreciate
the sights you see from the train. That is our way. There is
no need for the passengers to be curious about the track.
Someone will take care of it; Buddha will take care of it.

- Shunryu Suzuki

This is good.

It's so damn hard not to look, though, isn't it? :smirk:

I see where the OP is coming from though I would have (and have) phrased it differently.

The secret to happiness is to find a way to release the right amounts and proportions of neurotransmitters that will bring about a state perceived as happiness.
