the secret to happiness
    #9675599 -

keep yourself

busy
and/or
distracted

it doesn't pay to spend your time ruminating and introspecting. life is much easier when you are constantly engaged in work and leisure. alternatively you can distract yourself with any number of things. the two options share quite a bit of overlap though.

I disagree completely.  Distract yourself from what?  Reality?

The most miserable people I know do nothing but distract themselves so they don't have to think about their lives and where they are headed.

Action can be useful, but not if the motive is to be distracted or preoccupied.  Distraction gets you nowhere but closer to death.  I don't think I've ever experienced any personal growth that was not triggered by introspection.  Happiness is not just seeking pleasure or avoiding pain, it is refining your ability to accept yourself and your life.

Your mood says 'sad' BTW.

That's a pretty lame-ass advice

I think you may be on to something, but I think you have expressed this more clearly, and more tactfully too. It reminds me of an idea I read a little while back; something I really enjoyed and found useful:

Quote:
The Bodhisattva's way is called "the single-minded way,"
or "one railway track thousands of miles long." The railway
track is always the same. If it were to become wider or
narrower, it would be disastrous. Wherever you go, the
railway track is always the same. That is the Bodhisattva's
way. So even if the sun were to rise from the west, the
Bodhisattva has only one way. His way is in each moment
to express his nature and his sincerity.
We say railway track, but actually there is no such thing.
Sincerity itself is the railway track. The sights we see from
the train will change, but we are always running on the
same track. And there is no beginning or end to the track:
beginningless and endless track. There is no starting point
nor goal, nothing to attain. Just to run on the track is our
way. This is the nature of our Zen practice.
But when you become curious about the railway track,
danger is there. You should not see the railway track. If you
look at the track you will become dizzy. Just appreciate
the sights you see from the train. That is our way. There is
no need for the passengers to be curious about the track.
Someone will take care of it; Buddha will take care of it.

Compelling argument, MT, maybe you could expand on it and enlighten us all :strokebeard:

I think there is some validity to SJ's thought, in recognizing that he said "keep yourself busy and/or distracted."  I often find myself loafing around in deep thought idly allowing the experiences of life to pass me by.  I think that although it is important to be conscious and investigative of your world, it is equally important to be engaged in that world to a more physical degree.

Because we can rarely be absolutely positive about the cause/effect/significance of any experience, it is only useful to dwell on a singular subject for so long before you need to go collect more data from the field to bring back and process further.

It surely pays to spend time "ruminating and instrospecting" but when you do it too much you can go crazy :twitchy:

I recommend a healthy mix, if something is too easy you're probably not doing it right or over-complicating it enough

Because this recipe sounds like escapism to me. I see no positive aspect in doing so, but I can see a handful of negative, self-destructive possible outcomes.
I have learned that it is only acceptance of reality that can lead one to true happiness, because, in the moment you are aware of reality and aware of the state of your being at any given moment and embracing it, you stop all internal and external conflict, find better solutions for every obstacle, and simply enjoy the ride.

This doesn't make sense to me. How can being in touch with yourself stop you from being active, work, or do anything else? If anything, it makes everything more enjoyable and can add to the effectiveness of your work. When we lose our self awareness, irrational thoughts and emotions can squeeze in unobserved, and create irritability, mental exhaustion, and even depression. It is very easy for these negative emotions to occur, and if we're not "there" (as in present), then they have the opportunity to flourish and turn into problems of huge proportions. The sleep of reason can indeed produce monsters.

that makes absolutely no sense.  thought, action, distraction, whatever...death appears at the same rate, variable of course by the thoughts/actions/distractions that one participates in

That's what I mean.  Distraction just passes the time, it does not bring you closer to happiness.

this is when someone says "define happiness"

often the best I can get is when a rosy glow comes from my face and grumpy people start acting jealous.

personally I don't notice it much, because I am painting.

then of course there is that odd smirk that gets noticed as someone passes by while I am typing one of these comments.

The concept of distraction is one of which is a temporary fix of your problem.

When you distract, or shift focus, the problem does not dissapear.

Let us say the roof of my house is rotting away. I have a few months before it will collapse. Rather than fixing this problem, i will sit on my computer and distract my self from the situation. The situation still exists, and even though my mind is focused upon the shroomery, my roof will still collapse onto my head crushing me into obl

Hey, don't knock this. It's escapism. It's why we have dreams. Unfortunatly, you can't escape from reality all the time, and that's where thinking is involved. Or meditation. Some problems are very difficult to overcome, but with a change on one's outlook, they don't seem so bad anymore.

Although I believe it can be beneficial to escape reality now and again with some form of entertainment or distraction, I do not think that this is the secret to happiness. Like others have mentioned, people who constantly distract themselves tend to be very unhappy because in reality what they are doing is running or hiding from priorities. Much of what we do in our regular lives can benefit from careful contemplation or meditation. After a long day of work it is very healthy for any individual to reflect on the day's achievements and/or mistakes. Then again it can also be problematic if all you do is think about work nonstop. This is why I say that once in a while it can be beneficial to find a pleasurable escape from reality like with a good movie, favorite TV show or even a good book. There is a line that must be drawn somewhere and just as too much thinking about work or priorities without a break can be problematic so can constantly distracting yourself.

my greatest happiness, I feel totally aware of what is happening to me and am engaged.. not distracted

maybe it is a solution for people who are constantly depressed.. because then distraction from their depressed thoughts might be the key to happiness

though as suggested.. escapism aint the most productive way of dealing with issues

being busy does not involve being oblivious,
instead it is an opportunity to be involved creatively.
there is a lot of joy in being engaged like that - this is not about evading boredom, or Disney style entertainment.

alot of people are fine when they are distracted by activity but when they have a minute to relax they suddenly realize that what they have been doing is completely pointless & get depressed, like being at work all day chatting with collegues but then finsihing work like 'this is a load of BS'

so yes you may be happy while busy but nobody can be busy 24/7, eventually you have to stop & wonder, why do you do what you do? to get where? what for?

in my experience introspection is the key to all the happyness you could ask for, infact during introspection i have so much happyness all i want to do is give it away

imo staying in constant activity & not questioning why is pretty mindless

but i like relaxation, deep deep relaxation that only instrospection can bring
staying in constant activity either physcial or mental is not relaxing, especially mental, i can physically work hard all day & stay in constant relaxation without even the feeling im doing anything, its the mental thought of 'im doing this' that weighs heavy, not the act in itself

our attention is our most powerful tool, i see a wise person as one who puts their attention on something worthwhile, not just any distraction

whatever works for making you happy

:peace:

It's different for everybody. I am humbly satisfied with my current situation (which includes much solitude, few distractions, and little, if any, business.).
