inoculating process
    #968386 - 10/17/02 08:01 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

this is my first attempt at growing shrooms, i'm using the PF-tek for simple minds. i used a steamer to sterilize the jar for about an hour, then let it cool for half and hour then i inoculated the jar but it;s been sittng there for 6 days now. should i just trash it and start over? or give it a bit more time.
oh yah and i'm using the course vermiculite and a wide mouth jar that's about 300ml. but i still used teh same amount of vermiculite and brown rice flour but just added more vermiculite to top it off.
i was careful to heat the niddle with a lighter first and after i was doneis there anyway for my syringe to get contaminated and kill all the spores?

i'd give it more time, but i don't think you waited long enough for the jars to cool. if your jars were hot enough to be sterile, they were almost certainly not cool enough to innoculate in just 1/2 hour. if you're jars were warm to the touch, that means they are at least as warm as your body (98.6 F) and therefore too hot for innoculation.

i had my jars for 10 days and there was no sign of growth.  on the 11th day. BAM there was growth all over the place.  on all the jars.  just give it some time.  the key to this is patience. you can't go and check on your jars every 15 minutes, just forget about them and grab them in a few days.  laterzzz

i got a question that i can't find an answer to in the faq's- if h202 kills all contams, and heat kills h202
could you use a 50/50 h202/h20 with brf/verm to kill contams, then boil yer jars (no pc'ing) to kill the
h202 and innoculate? don't flame me too bad folks i'm a total noob thanx

Any excess H2O2 would kill your spores upon innoculation.... In addition, heat and H2O2 is a free radical reaction (thats what makes your hair go blonde if you put peroxide in it) you would probably get some sort of weird reaction with the vermeculite, brf, or air that would leave some sort of weird organic chemical that the spores or mycellium might not like too much.

if you do......just use a little bit of h202, like a drop or two. no more. if you boil the jars long enough, the vermiculite should be fine without it. its the grains you should worry about....i might start putting h202 in my grain jars. good thinking buddy.
