Asking Canadians

A Canadian friend of mine told me that there are places in Canada that, if you submit plans to build a domicile and create your own road to get to it, you can receive huge parcels of land for free.  He says it's in places that to the north and cold as hell.  He even said there is a bunch of yet-to-be-named lakes, and if you claim it, you can even name the lake.  I was just wondering if there is any truth to this - not that I would want to live anywhere that cold.  He was talking about somewhere north of Toronto, but said ti was likely to be the same in the west as well.

Just to feed my interests, I'd like to know from anyone who has heard of this.  We had a similar thing in the United States like 100 years ago to "tame the frontier."

I really don't know.  He just said something along the lines of there is this place to the north of Toronto (where he lives) where there are all these lakes that haven't been named.  Then he got into being able to just claim the land.

He said it wouldn't be a publicly funded road - basically you have to make your own path to get there.  If you had a helicopter or something, you wouldn't have to build the road.  We conversed about this for like 20 minutes over beers before the subject changed to something else.

that's it then.  I'm building a skyrise in the arctic circle in Canada - not paying for the land and making it totally inaccessible to anyone without a helicopter!

I still need a Canadian to verify that I can get the land for free though, and it has to be near an unnamed lake so I can name it Lake Ballsackalingus.

I'd bet on it being in Northern Quebec or NWT...anywhere else is already claimed by Natives or Oil Patch Workers.

Norther Quebec is friggin desolate man...you should check out a map and have a look, its the most barren province of all of them. There's a bit of hydro damn going on up there but aside from that, I wouldn't put it past them to give you a lake or a hunk of land for the shit of it.
