Wireless standards/Router Issue
    #9596748 -

So I just switched from time warner to fios and upgraded my bandwidth to 20Mbit, the problem I am having however is that I am not really seeing much of an upgrade in my download speed on my computer connected wirelessly to the router. A computer I have connected via wire shows the improvement but not the wireless connection. Now my computer is connected  wirelessly to the LAN at 54Mbps and I was wondering if this was the bottleneck? My wireless card says its capable up to 108Mbps and I'm wondering if the router is limiting the connection if it is only capable of 54Mbps? Also if I were to manage to get the wireless network to connect up aat 108Mbps would my internet be faster? I would think so, but I don't see why a 54Mbps connection can't handle the 20Mbps internet better. My upload speeds seem to be better but my download speed seems to be the same as it was when it was a 10Mbps connection. I'm not sure the capabilities of verizons router so if anybody could let me know the specs I'd appreciate, I've tried to find out but I've really only found not so trustworthy info saying it was capable of a 100Mbps wireless connection. THe router is MI424WR. Also could it be the computer limiting the transfer speeds?

I've experienced this too. The overheads caused by wifi slow down your internet speed by reasons I don't fully understand. I've noticed that FTP suffers more than HTTP, so I wonder if it's something to do with the protocol.

I searched around for weeks looking for a solution, until finally I came across this. It's a free program that tweaks your settings. I was extremely skeptical until I saw the results. Particularly with bittorrent!

Do some benchmarks (http and bittorrent), then try the program and compare.

hmmm
what is your wireless router IEEE 802.11 type?

IEEE802.11b- 11mbs
IEEE802.11g- 54mbs
IEEE802.11g Super-G 108mbs
IEEE802.11n Draft?

If the wireless card is 108mbs it sounds like Super-G to me.

Make sure the router is the same IEEE or your speed will be limited by the routers max speed.

Also if it is super-g, make sure super-g is turned on via the router configuration. Mine is optional and is by default off.

But if his computer is reporting a connection speed of 54mbps then it must be 802.11g - the question is why is his internet speed of 20mbps limited by a wireless speed of 54mbps?

I guess the connection might be reporting a maximum speed of 54. It would be good to measure your actual wifi speed, somehow.

sorry a bit lost today.well most days lolz. I don't know if this is any help. Im not to great on your networks seeming my network plans are completely different. Im use to 4mbs not 20 lolz.

Yea I don't see the reason why the wireless shouldn't have improved.
the throughput (average actual speed) of the g network is 19mbps. just 1 mb under your broadband down speed.

Actiontec MI424WR - is a IEEE802.11g edition, not super-G so its limited to 54mbs max speed, even if your card can handle up to 108mbs?

ok a very basic way to test you broadband would have to do a speed test. via www.speedtest.net/
and compare that to your wired speedtest?

Thanks guys alot of good info here. I'm starting to think that it is my computer that is limiting  the speed. I just got the computer up and working after it being inoperable for several months. I had a power supply crap out on me due to the power supply fan dying on it. I ran the computer with the case open and a desk fan blowing in on it for a while to stop it from overheating lol. That crapped out eventually and it sat for months before I got around to finding a replacement on the internet. The comp works now but alot slower than before so I think there might be some components that are shot. I think that might be why its working slower, however it might be the WiFi settings. I might try hooking it up via wire to see if the speed improves. I know for a fact that the speed of my connection is faster as another computer hooked up to it via wire doubled in speed. This was verified with speakeasy.net's speed test. I'm going to try moving the comp to see if it is the wireless, its just a pain as the comp is a pretty big desktop with alot of stuff plugged into it.

u should try hard wiring to the router so u can be sure if it is the pc or wifi.  my guess is its the wireless, it can only go so fast.

I think he tried that.

Though yes, he should try it with his own computer.

As I said, I've experience this before. Being on wifi halves my internet speed. But that was greatly improved after running TCP optimise, now the difference is pretty small.

Your wireless connection is more than twice as fast as your Internet connection.

The overhead is from encryption, latency, and possibly mechanical devices such as a hard disk.

Another issue may be that you've got somebody piggybacking off of your WiFi signal. In your area there might also be lots of WiFi traffic. Which would cause problems if several of the channels were the same. Download Net Stumbler and see how many networks are around, their SSID names, and which channels are used the most. Then adapt. If you have a default SSID change it. If you are on channel6 and so are 5 others around you, then change it. ETC... get info on your environment too.

Another thing about your download speeds. Most of the time you will NOT hit a 2MB per. second download speed from ANY website. The highest download speed I've ever gotten on The Internet was 1.9MBPS. Note there is a difference between mb and MB just to clarify why my numbers may seem low. You can get a rough estimate of your speeds by dividing mbps by 10, because there are extra bits sent for crc and the like. So your 20mpbs theoretically can hit approximately 2MB per. second. However, the host you're receiving from will likely have much lower limitations and your hardware might too.

Hope I can help!

OP - Wait...

You've got a dedicated 20Mbps service? Isn't that expensive? That's like half of a freaking T3, man.

Anyway...what kind of actual download speed are you getting? Even with a T3 (44.736 Mpbs) at work, I only see around 100-200 Kbps actual download speed.

You can get 20Mbps with ADSL, if you're close enough to the exchange.
