Linksys wireless router troubles, any Gurus?

I've got a cable internet connection, and I've got that connected to a Linksys wireless 2.4ghz router, model number BEFW11S4. I think it's a few years old and as far as i know using old software.
I've got two roommates that use this connection. My one roommate has an older laptop, I think like 2 years old. 95% of the time, he has no problems whatsoever connecting and gets good connection speeds.
My other roommate just bought his laptop a month ago. Its an HP, its got a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN wireless modem. He has no problem connecting to other wireless networks like the university and whatnot, But at home he can never connect.
It takes a long time to connect (about 2 minutes) and 95% of the time when he does connect, it says Limited or no connectivity. Even though his wireless networks shows 5 green bars. Occasionally he does get on and gets good connectivity, but very rarely.
I'm kind of at a loss for waht to do. I've tried changing options on my router, I've tried messing around with his computer, and nothing i do really works.
The only tihng i can think of is that possibly the router software is to old? Is that possible? the only thing that makes me think that is that my roomate with the older computer always connects, but my roommate with the new computer can never get on. Would updating the router help possibly?
Or is there something else i may be missing.
Any suggestions are VERY welcome, cause I'd really like to get this figured out.
Thanks alot.

Have you looked at his tcp/ip settings? Does he use windows to connect, or does his wireless card have a separate utility that runs on his laptop?

He just uses windows to connect. Would a seperate utility work better maybe?

Probably not, but it is certainly something I would try... never know. Your router is an 802.11b, while a new laptop would be able to use both 802.11b and the more recent 802.11g. The older laptop would only be able to use 802.11b, most likely. My guess is there is a problem on the new laptop switching between the two standards. In the network section of the new laptop, under the wireless stuff, see if you can tell it to use only 802.11b for the connection in your home. Of course, you want 802.11g for everywhere else.

I had this same problem after I had set up a static IP address to make port forwarding possible... then I installed a new wireless card and operating system, I had to re-do a lot of the settings.

i would think this does have to do with the routers settings, firewalls, portforwarding, dynamic/static addresses...
that the router is old doesn't matter, tcp/ip and the internet ain't changed in oh, nearly 20 years... linksys makes good stuff and it can have its firmware updated to add any newer features from newer models...
if you really REALLY can't get it to work, i can talk you through getting the router on the internet, then i could log in remotely and check yer configs (god bless the internet). linksys support remote managment. even better, i could remote log into your computer after that and make sure yer windows is configured.
anyway, i'm really generous and need to make up to the world for all i've stolen from it, so PM me and i'll walk you through if needed.
