Headed North

Howdy all. Haven't posted in awhile. Used to use other names as well. Anywhoo, I'm from the SF Bay Area. Picked a lot of Cyans over the past few years here. But the way everythings kinda set up here, there is'n't that many prime habitats. And anywhere that is, people already know. Golden Gate Park is a great example. So I'm headed north. My cousin lves in Kirkland (outside of Seattle) and I was thinking of going there in a week or two. I also wanted to hit up Astoria. Here's the thing. I'm hopping freight trains. I've already been up there on trains numerous times, and I've even crossed the country on them. No worries there. First train stops in Portland, and I'd like to check that out. I also want to hit up Asotria, but there's only a little local railroad that runs trains MAYBE three times a week there.
So here's my questions: Is there local transportation to Astoria from Portland?
Anyone in Portland willing to trade a ride to Astoria for my knowledge of mushroom hunting?
Anyone from the Bay Area want to go with me? (gotta be physically fit/no whiners)
When would be my best bet for hitting up both places, Astoria and Seattle? I've checked the weather, and it looks like it's almost there, but I'd hate to be a week early, or a week late.
Comments, suggestions, help?
Thanks, Cyankid

I admire your dedication, not many people would be willing to travel 823 miles to go shroom hunting, but to do it all by hopping trains, that's hardcore.
Like others around here have said, it's been an extremely dry & warm summer/ealry fall here. I'd give it at least 2 or 3 weeks, and keep an eye on the forecast.

I figured it would be a bit longer. It really ain't that hardcore to ride a train up there, it's a lot of sleep and reading time actually. I obviously want to wait till season is in full swing, but I always seem to just miss it, ya know? Like, you wait and wait for the right weather, then boom, and if you're not in the right spot at the right time, you wait till next year. I hate that. Happened to me in Eureka two season ago. That's a lame place too. I mean, I really like the area, but as far as being able to pick mushrooms, it's lame. Not a big enough city to have a lot of habitats, and any that are there are well known. Too many hippies. Damn them hippies. That's why I'm going to Seatlle. Is camping at Ft. Stephens SP during Astoria season a really crazy idea? Is there even any camping spots? Once I ate mushrooms on a train coming back from wyoming. Almost as crazy as eating mushrooms at disneyland. I'm now rambling.....

Always wanted to travel, wanderlust I guess. I don't drive, I don't like cars. I hate greyhound. Flying's expensive. Hitchhikng is parasitic and dangerous. If you like freight trains, you know where they can be found. Where they can be found, they will sometimes stop. That's how I learned. Good luck.
