What's it like studying Psychology and or English?

What's you expereince with studying either or both these subjects?

U find it enjoyable?, horrible? any of it "fun" ?

What's the workload like?

Seems hard to get a job with these but i'm thinking of studying them.

Not sure about English, but I was a Psych major last semester. The courseload is pretty lax compared to other majors, and I really was not impressed with the amount of science in my classes (I was more interested in neuroscience/biopsych). None the less I decided to switch to biology, best decision I've made in a long time.

If you want to make any money with psych, I would plan on grad school.

There's one of the universitys here that i could study Psychology, English and Philosophy for my first year :strokebeard:

50% of me thinks that is the most bullshit list of subjects i could choose and 50% thinks it could be interesting

If you want to help people, then be a psych major. Don't be one if you want to make a lot of money!

If you want a job related to psychology, then you'll probably need at least a masters. With a bachelor's, you could help out on a psych ward, or possibly be a case worker. You could also get something completely unrelated to psych, that just has a bachelor's as a prereq (ie: office, human resources, etc)

The beauty of psychology, is that it has a wide array of sub-disciplines: neuroscience, clinical, cognitive, health, sports, social/cultural, etc

I am a psychology major, biology minor. I'm studying behavioral neuroscience and I like it. It's a relatively new discipline, and there is a lot to find out. The brain is still a mystery to scientists.

Clinical psychology is very competitive, and requires a lot of patience. It's the archetypal pscyhologist, sitting there listening to patients, administering tests.

Wow!  Perfectly put!  I did graduate with a degree in psychology. I didn't do a damn thing with it.  You definitely have to go to grad school to do anything with it.  I actually changed my major from Biology to Psychology.  Why?  Chemistry KILLED ME!  Chemistry is a prerequisite for Biology 2.  I couldn't hang with the level of math involved for Chemistry.  Social Psychology was probably the most interesting course I took.

Lol yeah man I hear ya, I'm actually the exact opposite. Math is one of my strongpoints so I tend to do better in classes like chemistry than say, social psych. That was one of the deciding factors in switching majors.

I would really only study philosophy if you are planning on teaching or going to law school. Besides that it can be a useless degree IMO.

What do you actually DO in a university level English class?
read a bunch of books and write essays on them?

In Psych do you just read about all the different studies like asch and milgram and zimbardo etc? or does it go into it in a bit more depth, do they use any scientific evidence and not just old studies from the 70's?

You'll be going over all those studies but there is definitely a lot more content. You'll start out with gen. psych that covers every subject imaginable, and later on start to specialize in different areas. For example my school has upper division classes with emphasis on neuropsych, cognitive/behavioral psych, and social psych. If you are looking for scientific evidence, the most satisfying classes will probably fall under neuropsych.

It doesn't really start "kicking" until you hitting your "statistics courses".  I wouldn't say that it's ALL studies of the psychologists in the 70's.  You have to study all the "schools of thought".  Not only that, but there are soooooo many areas of study to consider.....  Human Sexuality , Cognitive Processes,  Human Relations ,  Developmental Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Social Psychology, Behavior & Motivation  etc. etc.  They all have people in the past that have paved the road to the present.  You have to study them as well.

I enjoyed studying English.  I never studied psychology.  My ex-gf had a minor in it and I've worked for psychologists (I was hired to make racial slurs in front of strangers) and I have a low opinion of it.

In English, generally you read books or poetry and then, yes, you write essays on them.  I really liked it but my love of reading fiction is basically gone because most of the courses I took involved reading fiction.  The nice part about studying English or any language's literature, is that the classes were always pretty good because they involve going to class to talk about the book you've just read and usually the books are pretty good.

I'm a psych minor and it sucks.  A lot.  The professors don't know much more than the textbook and most of the students are only there because they had no idea what to minor in and kind of ended up with psychology.  LAME! :justdontknow:

im an english writing major and it is pretty niche. it definitely doesnt involve the coursework as some other subjects (i actually began my college career in engineering), but its pretty cool if you make some friends who are passionate about the subject. my college has a pretty vibrant writing community too, so there is always incentive to do your best.

I'm planning on studying Psychology and have my first day of Winter classes in "Developmental Psychology" tomorrow. I haven't taken much, and can't give you much advice so this post is probably useless.

But my opinion about others who say Psychology sucks...you either have it or you don't. Simple. I agree with whoever was explaining the different subdivisions in psych. I personally would like to get my MFT to help others in counseling, but it depends on what you're interested in the field. Try taking the beginning psychology classes as they go over a lot of the different subdivisions.

I'm an English major, and I will tell you that it was the best decision I ever made (I started out as a bio major, pipe dream resulting in disaster).

The work load is very lax compared to other major, just a lot of writing.  The classes are great and all my professors are really down to earth, ones even a huge Dead head :gd_icon: .

The cherry on top is that I got all the core bullshit out of the way my first year, so I'm taking nothing but 15 credits of literature and creative writing classes.  My earliest class is 1:00pm and I don't have any classes on Friday. Tons of free time  :bongload:  and not much effort on my part as writing comes naturally and has always been a hobby of mine.  I'm living the dream.


My biggest concern was after college, cause I really did not want to be a teacher.  Luckily, I found out thats theres tons of stuff you can do with a BA in English. The career center at my school showed me several options from    working in museums, journalism, and even PR for big businesses.  It's definitely a groovy major if you're into writing and stuff.
