Help me improve my english! (very simple grammar q)
    #4706473 - 09/24/05 08:04 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

As some of you know I live in Spain and even tho my english is good enough to get my points across (not that I have so many anyway) there's still something that's bugging me... How the fuck do I know when to use "in", "at" and "on"?

Lord, this has been driving me insane for years and I still don't get it. I admit I skipped that class, but surey some of you my good friends here will help me out and make my life a lot less miserable
Thanks in advance!

Think of in as being short for inside. What's in(side) the box?
Also can be used to describe something fashionable. The "in" thing to do.

The other two are harder to describe. Let me ponder a bit.

Think of at as being short for located. Where is the dog (loc)at(ed)?

IN We use in with months - in May
seasons - in winter
country - in Greece
city or town names - in New York
times of the day - in the morning, afternoon or evening
BUT at night!
ON We use "on" with specific days - on Friday, on New Year's Day, on April the 19th
American English - "on the weekend OR on weekends"
AT We use "at" with specific times - at 7 o'clock, at 6.15
at night
specific places in a city - at school
British English - "at the weekend OR at weekends"
TO We use "to" with verbs which show movement such as go and come - He goes to school.
She returned to the store.
They are coming to the party tonight.

What is this? It is a prolate spheroid, an elongated sphere in which the outer leather casing is drawn tightly over a somewhat smaller rubber tubing. Better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football.

-John Heisman

"I didn’t dive on one fumble because the way my leg was (positioned)," Newton told reporters in Charlotte on Tuesday. "It could have been contorted in a way. You say my effort? I didn’t dive down. I fumbled - that’s fine. That’s fine. We didn’t lose the game because of that fumble.”

-Scam Newton

"at" can also mean towards

"I spit at him" = "I spit towards him"
"he was pointing at the tv" = "he was pointing towards the tv"

"on" usually means "on top of"

"the bong is on the table" = "the bong is on top of the table"

it gets a little more confusing when you use it like:

"I'm on the internet"
"I'm fucked up on booze"

I really don't know how to explain that usage...

This really is a challenge. Has me wondering if the reason we can't explain using on as in "what's on tv" is because it is not proper. Are we supposed to say "what is being broadcast to the television?"
I'm pretty sure it has more to do with a lack of proper English study(on my part anyhow) though.

We need an English professor to stop through this thread and get ON the case.

Since in, at and on are all prepositions, it is improper to use them at the end of a sentance.

The dictionary, doh!  Should have thought to look in there for a good explanation :imslow:
On is used to indicate a lot of different things.

A link that disagrees.
