I know someone who wants to try a bulk tek, but cannot fit a quart jar in their small pressure cooker. They are planning on using plastic lids on the jars and do not want to damage the jars or the pressure cooker.
In the event that a quart jar couldnt fit in a small pressure cooker, would it be alright to put the jar in at an angle or perhaps completly horizontally?
What are the chances that a plastic lid would melt if touching the sides of the pressure cooker?

If your just innocing another bulk substrate why not crumble cakes. Dont nkow about jar tilting since it might be more prone to gain water and screwup the moisture content? Just crumble cakes and you'll be fine with your pasteurized bulk substrate. Chances of plastic melting touching the metal is pretty good since u consider the are is like 220 or 230 the metal will be a little hotter i'd say 250-270??? but thats just my guess.

The metal of a pressure cooker is as hot as the inside. You can tilt a jar, as long the contents are not pouring out.
Why not use pint jars?

I agree with Anno. I have had to tilt quarts before, and as long as you don't let water pour in, you should be fine. I also wonder why you don't go with pints instead. If you can fit a quart in sideways, you should be able to fit three pints.

>I used a little glass salt and pepper shaker before Really?? Did you also use culture tubes for preparing spawn? How many grain kernels did you fit in? 11? 14?

The reason they want to use a quart is because one should be enough to colonize the straw being used. If using even just 2 pints, a grain to grain transfer would have to take place to make sure the jars would both be the same strain. You see what im sayin? its just easier to have one jar than have to worry about contamination in a transfer.
4 half pints fit, although quite tight, with the plastic lids touching (i think) so we're not too worryed about the plastic melting. Tin foil would be placed over the top to prevent moisture from getting in and mushing up the jar.
Well, what do you think? Anything to worry about here?
