What can and can't be PC'd (for the faq)
    #1559922 - 05/19/03 02:01 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Alright everybody. Time to list all the randomn things that have or haven't survived the pressure cooker. I think it would be a handy reference to save people some trouble.

We know the standard things that can be pc'd (jars, lids, filter disks, syringes etc)

But what about other things? Anybody PC PVC pipe? What about gatorade bottles (Nope, I melted a few). A blender? Come on, I know people have ruined some stuff, and I want to hear about it.

I'll start.
blender blade assembly and retainer ring from most blenders can be pc'd, although the retainer ring will warp after several pcings.
The plastic blender pitcher of a cheap Hamilton Beach blender can't be pc'd. It warps and melts.
Gatorade bottles will melt, deform and generally not withstand being pc'd.

OK, your turn....I'll compile a list of these for the faq if we get a good list going.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

such a great thread and i have so little to contribute. I have never tried to PC something that I didn't fully believe would withstand the treatment. the worst I have done is break cheap glass jars in a PC. Canning jars have never broken but the threaded regular mouth containers you get at places like Big Lots are made of substandard glass.

I suggest not replying to the post unless you have successfully PCed something or unsuccessfully PCed something. Just a thought.

Ironic.

Any plastic lid with a triangle & the #5 with PP stamped on it (underside of the lid) will PC.

Automotive radiator hose will PC. I know because my foaf used the wrong product number when he ordered 1000 autoclave bags. He got the right size bags, except they lacked a filter patch.

He used 4 inch lengths of 2 inch bore radiator hose as a neck for the bags (pull bag neck through hose, double back over exterior of hose, apply filter material over opening & clamp filter & bag tight with a metal radiator clamp. Presto Chango, a filter patch.

Micropore 3M micro/porious tape will PC.

Transpore 3M micro/porious tape will not PC (melts).

PVC pipe for irrigation will not PC (melts, shrinks, warps).

I have no idea what ya'll are talking about. But I remembered something

Can't be PC'd
The plastic pump and valve system from a cheap, pump up pressurized garden sprayer available at most hardware stores for around $10-12.

Can be PC'd
1/2 gallon square jars and plastic lids "harvest master" brand, available at dollar stores.

Definition of Irony:

i?ron?ic ( P ) Pronunciation Key (-rnk) also i?ron?i?cal (-rn-kl)
adj.
1.Characterized by or constituting irony.
2.Given to the use of irony. See Synonyms at sarcastic.
3.Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended:

You'd expect me to say something that would contribute to the post since what I was saying was contrary to what my actions were. Hypocritical? Yeah, it is, but it's ironic too. But I'm probably wrong since I don't have 2,000+ posts on my tab, eh?
