I think you've got your definition for cognitive dissonance a bit off there.

It's the psychological effect felt when there is a difference in perception of reality through the senses and that expected to occur by ones mind.

It appears the most pitiful victims of Christianity truly do believe all that Evangelical poppycock about the Bible being able to answer ALL of your questions about ANYTHING, and have difficulty wrapping their heads around the idea that their questions about American politics are far over the poor old book's head.

I work with a guy who goes to a Catholic church every day.  Apparently the church has been telling everyone to stockpile food and water to prepare for some rapture type event that will be happening soon.  He tells me that only he and his people will be saved and that they will give birth to a new America after this one is destroyed. It is like they are building an army.

The catholc church accepts the theory of evolution.  Your family shouldn't have any problem with what you are learning in evolutionary biology.

yeah thats definitely how my parents view the world. any time i have a discussion with them about anything at all, their response is, "well, you're wrong, b/c in the Bible it says..." and then a turd falls out of their mouth. they have totally lost the ability to think about a topic and make an opinion based on logic. it always come down to, "the Bible says,"

My mom married into a redneck family from the South.

You should have seen the look on their faces when I started describing the pagan rituals of christmas and that jesus was actually a mushroom.

The room was really really quiet for a bit and then their bible talk came back full force.

I even got the "the Earth is only 6000 years old" talk,  I asked them why we haven't seen any events like that which happened in the bible.

Their answer: "People didn't believe as much as we do now".

I said "What?!" and then Nascar came on.

I don't understand this. Since the 1960's (Vatican II) the church has fully endorsed evolution. Don't they keep up with the times?

Half of my family is Catholic, the other half Lutheran. I'm from Texas. I've never had ANYBODY in my family come up with some shit like this. Religious moderates do exist; in fact, to me they're much more real than crazies. I tend to think of the crazies as exaggerated versions of reality, but I keep being reassured that a lot of people really are this nuts.  WTF is wrong with your mother? Maybe you should help her experience going to a normal church, maybe a church where the people have some money and aren't prone to crazy crackpot theories.... you know, where the parishoners are wealthy enough to be kind of shallow. I've found those Christians tend to be more moderate, they have a lot to lose so they don't pick up snakes or roll around on the floor...
