Why America isn't in the Bible
    #9532969 -

I had a conversation with my mom over Christmas, and she has bought into the idea preached by her new pastor that America is going to fall apart, b/c it is not mentioned in the Bible. I explained that the Bible was written from a period of 600bc - 400ad, and that America didnt exist until the 1700s, and that the Bible doesnt mention the internet or automobiles either. but no, if god liked America, it would've been talked about in the Bible (LOL).

i think this is crazy, in a cult sort of way. i brought this up last night to some friends and they said that their parents are also caught up on this idea.

seriously, What. The. Fuck. anybody else heard people talk about this or is it just the crazies around here?

America is in the Mormon bible, so, uh, like, it's got that going for it.

I do believe it's just the crazies who buy into anything their pastors tell them. My father is the same way, and I began tuning out whenever he started in on the Bible and it's many infallible truths.

I'm afraid to talk back or challenge him on it because he might feel compelled to kill me. (Exodus 21:15, Leviticus 20:9, Deuteronomy 21:18-21, Mark 7:9-13, Matthew 15:4-7)

im sorry to say it, but your mum is bat shit crazy.  don't try reasoning with her,  religious people lack a sense of objectivity and intelligence once they decide faith is more credible than fact.

ive heard that my whole life. i always answer, "Yeah, like gravity." that or, "As opposed to what, Creationism? Thats a fact, huh?"

to believe that its odd that a country from the 1700s isn't mentioned in a book written 1300 years before that is mind numbingly stupid.

Ya, there was a book emitted from the bible (all the books collectively referred to as the 'Apocrypha') called "Bel and the Dragon."

That, and dragons (or giant serpents depending on which badly translated copy you're reading) are mentioned all throughout the old and new testaments, including quite a few in Revelations

I like the Mormon explanation for dinosaurs though.  They claim that there are multiple gods ruling over multiple worlds.  They say that dinosaurs are likely beings that have already completed the divine plan and gone to the afterlife, and that our god reused the matter from another planet to create this one.  Of course, that doesn't explain strata and all that, but at least it acknowledges the likelihood of aliens, in fact it says that they are aliens (or would that make us the aliens).  That's not anywhere in their official text, but I've heard it several times.

yeah i've read the Apocrypha and the Gnostic texts that were also omitted.

the bottom line is, if you can accept talking snakes and donkeys as reality, and you honestly believe that a man parted a sea and that 500 dead saints rose from the ground and went preaching as zombies into Jerusalem without being mentioned anywhere else in history, you're not using your brain.

its when people take rubbish from that book and use it for radical ideas that i get shocked. i'd like to think we're beyond all that, but apparently not. maybe in 30 more years when all the Baby Boomers are dead.

I'm proud of you.  Bio major, that's pretty cool.

My grandma is the same way.  What I've told her is that actually there is two parts to evolution.  One part is FACT that it actually occurs because there is fossil evidence to prove it.  Nobody who's sane can deny that.  The second part to it is the theory on why evolution occurs.  Most think by natural selection.

Matthew 27:50-53. its the only gospel that mentions it. you'd really figure that even in that time period, a bunch of zombie saints roaming the streets would get the attention of, well, everyone.

It would be interesting for those of you that aren't familiar with the term "cognitive dissonance" to look it up.

Cognitive dissonance has been found in people like Condoleeza Rice. Its a mechanism by which people deny all evidence and cling to their current beliefs despite what logic and reason supports.

When you're through and you think you have a fair understanding, have your family look it up. Its a real thing and unfortunately all of us have resorted to it from time to time. Hopefully the fact that psychology has a name for "fucked up ways to cope" may wake some people up.

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE is not an appropriate coping mechanism. Our problems are real and our stances are delusional. We should welcome ideas and stimuli that disturb our equilibrium for that is when we participate in things like debate and critical thinking.
